Job overview

The role of the Lead Clinician is to have responsibility for the clinical leadership, service development, quality, and performance of their specialty. The Lead Clinician provides strategic direction for the specialty and contributes to service planning and clinical governance. They will work closely with their medical colleagues within this specialty and operational and nursing management within the Care Group.

Appointments will normally be made for a period of no less than three years and will be subject to the agreement of the Medical Director.

The work of the Lead Clinician will be identified within the individual’s job plan, where responsibility payment and any compensatory reduction in other work will also be made clear.

Main duties of the job

• To provide leadership for the specialty, working with Care Group and Trust leadership.
• Continuously develop clinical services in line with best practice and the available evidence base, directorate, and Trust objectives.
• To use activity and outcome information to monitor and develop appropriate service standards and plans.
• To work with directorate management team to inform the contracting process with commissioners.
• To ensure that agreed contracts with commissioners are appropriate and met, including specified quality standards.
• To implement Trust policies e.g. on the introduction of new clinical procedures, and on Health & Safety.
• To ensure appropriate mechanisms are in place so that effective two‑way communications take place with clinical staff within the Directorate.
• To provide advice to the Care Group on specialty issues, through the Care Group Director.
• To liaise with post‑graduate tutor and other departments with regards to trainee medical staff deployment, development, and recruitment.
• To ensure clinical audit is appropriate and takes place within the Trust’s policies.
• To ensure that the Trust’s Risk management policies and procedures are implemented and that the Adverse Incident Reporting System is adhered to.
• To ensure that the medical workforce works in multi‑disciplinary team working to promote quality care.
• To develop and model new business ideas within the specialty, prior to agreement through business case process within Trust structure.
• To lead on the implementation of new policies and procedures, as appropriate to the service need.
• Attend appropriate directorate meetings, or in their absence, to ensure that a delegated deputy does so, in order to maintain representation at directorate level for each individual specialty.
• To deputise appropriately for the Clinical Director as required, for example attending meetings and groups.
• To lead on specialty job planning, supporting Consultants and SAS Doctors & Dentists in Specialty to agree their prospective job plans.
