Laboratory Technician (R&D)
The Laboratory Technician role directly and indirectly supports scientists across R&D functions within AstraZeneca & Cancer Research UK, allowing scientists to concentrate on their core role. This role is primarily lab‑based, focusing on the delivery of scientific technical support to the R&D laboratories in accordance with Health and Safety and Good Laboratory Standards requirements at the Anne McLaren Building (AMB). Important: this role includes working within an in‑vivo environment and driving FM Service Delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure activities are performed with quality and to defined schedules within a specified area. Act and report on deviations.
- Contribute to laboratory operational efficiency by liaising with FM suppliers and stakeholders, including AstraZeneca and Cambridge University staff.
- Assist with booking, hosting, and visits from internal/external partners, including inspections/audits (main point of contact for hosting internal contractors).
- Act as a contact for key customers.
- Optimise use of shared space and maintain BAU throughout the changing footprint.
- Proactively identify and support operational efficiencies by implementing process improvements resulting in time and cost savings for the customer.
- Create, maintain and update relevant documentation in support of service delivery, compliance and training.
- Report on KPIs, metrics, SLAs and weekly tasks.
- Deliver operational laboratory support, managing workload and service levels as required by the research group(s).
- Preventative maintenance, cleaning and documentation of laboratory instruments (incubators, tissue culture hoods & water baths).
- Perform specialist equipment user performance checks (e.g. balances, pH meters).
- Manage tube labelling services.
- Manage consumables & reagents, including Point of Use (PoU) Kanban areas by daily monitoring and replenishment, liaising with in‑house media prep. services, VHP preparation.
- Maintain and organise laboratory consumable & reagent inventories.
- Monitor and keep communal areas clean and tidy.
- Receipt and unpacking of temperature‑sensitive parcel deliveries.
- Manage & shipment of pipettes for calibration and servicing off‑site.
- Waste management.
- Assist in study preparation.
- Adhere to SHE regulations, PPE policies and follow Avantor work instructions & risk assessments.
- Assist Laboratory Manager to maintain a safe laboratory environment and report any incidents/near misses.
- Work proactively with line manager to ensure all training activities are completed and signed off on time.
Qualifications
- Experience of working in a laboratory environment.
- A scientific qualification is preferable, or experience working within a scientific environment.
- Knowledge of SHE requirements in a laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of GLP regulations.
- Good planning, organisational and analytical skills.
