Junior Clinical Fellow in ENT

This post is for tenure of 6 months (with view to extend if suitable). The appointment is primarily based at Guy's Hospital. The position is full‑time and will include on‑call commitments at SHO level, including nights and weekends. It offers an excellent opportunity to gain clinical, surgical and research experience across ENT and Head & Neck surgery at a prestigious tertiary centre.

The ENT Department at Guy's & St Thomas' provides tertiary referral Head & Neck cancer, skull base, rhinology/facial plastics and otology (including implantation) and paediatric services. It also provides general secondary level ENT services to Lambeth and Southwark.

Main duties of the job
  • Assist in the provision of high quality ENT and Head & Neck services to Trust patients.
  • Diagnose and treat patients of the Trust in such hospitals, health centres, clinics or other premises as required.
  • Participate in clinical and other service activities to ensure a high quality of patient care and to contribute to service needs and developments.
  • Take part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
  • Participate in research activities with the Department.
  • Help maintain the data collection of patients.
  • Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for proper delegation to, and training of, your staff.
  • Work actively and professionally alongside all team members, clinical and non‑clinical.
  • Participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.

Job responsibilities

The department has two designated wards: Blundell mainly for Head and Neck and complex ENT patients, and Esther which is a short‑stay surgical ward. The post holder will join a dedicated team of 11 Junior Residents clinical level FY2‑ST2‑1 JCFs and a wider clinical team of 15 SpRs & SCFs (across ENT adult & Paeds and Head & Neck), 7 Head & Neck Consultants and 16 ENT Consultants. This post will provide the post‑holder with unrivalled clinical experience and many opportunities for portfolio development including audit and research. The role occupies a central position in the Trust’s delivery of high‑quality clinical care and carries significant responsibility.

Main place of employment: The post will be predominantly based at the Guys site. It is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, either on an on‑going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.

Annual Leave: All leave must be requested at least six weeks in advance to the Resident Rota Co‑ordinator. Some leave requests may need prior agreement with the Clinical Lead and or your supervising consultant. Appropriate arrangements for cover of service provision must be made if needed.

Study Leave: Study Leave must be requested with at least 6 weeks notice. Requests need to be made to the Junior Doctor Co‑ordinator and are granted at the discretion of the Education team and service provision. In extenuating circumstances short‑notice requests will be considered. Study leave requested must be appropriate to your grade and training programme. Funding for CPD will be equivalent to that of the appropriate Training post.

Training of multi‑disciplinary staff: The post holder will take responsibility for the training and direction of multi‑disciplinary staff allocated to him/her under the aegis of the training plan that the post‑holder has agreed with their supervising consultant.

Teaching: The post holder will be expected to contribute as appropriate in the teaching of multi‑disciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Clinical Governance: All medical and dental staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas and their audit of their own clinical work as part of their appraisal.

Mutual Obligation to Monitor Hours: There is a contractual obligation on employers to monitor working hours through robust local monitoring arrangements supported by national guidance, and on individual doctors to cooperate with those monitoring arrangements.

European Working Time Directive (EWTD): All posts and working patterns are under constant review in line with EWTD guidelines.

Educational Programme: Neither the London Deanery nor the Royal College accredits this post for postgraduate training. However the post‑holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational activities e.g. departmental meetings, x‑ray meetings, pathology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings, journal clubs etc.

Appraisal: All medical and dental staff are required to undertake annual appraisal as per GMC guidelines.
