Job description
Maintenance Engineer

Shift Pattern: 4 on / 4 off (days & nights)

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Engineer to help deliver a safe, reliable and efficient maintenance service across a large-scale automated handling environment. You'll play a key role in ensuring critical equipment operates smoothly, supporting both planned and reactive engineering activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out mechanical, electrical and controls maintenance on a range of automated handling assets, including conveyors, carousels, curve belts, vertical-sortation equipment, ploughs and automatic tag readers.
  • Respond to faults, undertake corrective actions and complete scheduled preventative tasks to minimise downtime.
  • Maintain clear communication with Engineering, Operations and other stakeholders, following agreed escalation processes.
  • Apply strong health & safety awareness in all tasks, ensuring procedures and safe systems of work are followed.
  • Record maintenance activities within the CMMS, producing accurate reports to support performance analysis and fault investigations.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and contribute to ongoing optimisation initiatives.
  • Represent the engineering function in cross-departmental working groups when required.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and support workshop-based engineering tasks.
  • Participate in technical training courses to maintain and broaden your skills.
  • Keep work areas organised, clean and free from hazards.
  • Support engineering-related projects, including system testing and providing technical assurance.
  • Coordinate out-of-hours contractor attendance when needed.
  • Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role as required.
Candidate Profile
  • Able to work rotating 4-on / 4-off shifts, including days and nights, to support a 24/7 operation.
  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship.
  • Electrical and mechanical qualifications (minimum NVQ Level 2/3) plus IEE Wiring Regulations 17th/18th Edition.
  • Solid understanding of current health & safety legislation, including experience producing risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Experience maintaining conveyor or automated handling systems in sectors such as logistics, automotive, or FMCG.
  • Strong fault-finding skills and experience dealing with breakdowns in real time.
  • Competent in the use of CMMS software and structured PPM routines.
  • Experience working with industrial control systems (PLCs).
  • Capable of carrying out mechanical service tasks in both operational and workshop settings.
  • Competent in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Able to interpret schematic drawings and O&M manuals
