About the job.

National Highways is seeking a dedicated Inspector to support our Midlands Region operations. This role offers flexibility in location and can be based at any of our regional offices, including Snowhill in Birmingham or Stirling House in Nottingham.

The main responsibilities of this role include planning and conducting inspections of all types of highway structure assets in accordance with agreed schedules, procedures, and standards. The Inspector will be expected to identify and report defects by raising appropriate work orders, and play a key role in prioritising and developing maintenance schemes to ensure the continued safety and integrity of the infrastructure.

  • Work with Inspection Manager to plan, deliver and report upon the cyclical and special Inspection programmes for assets is in line with agreed timescales, budgets procedures standards, guidance and industry best practice.
  • Provide support to Inspection Manager by arranging roadspace and creating orders for suppliers to deliver bridge inspections, with customer focus in mind.
  • Liaising with key stakeholders such as Local Authorities, Network Rail, Canal & River Trust and land owners to facilitate all types of bridge inspections.
  • Producing specifications to permit the procurement of monitoring, investigation, testing and other special inspections of structures.
  • Complete cyclical and special inspections of highway assets, including complex structures, identify defects, defect causes and options for remedial actions, in line with agreed timescales, procedures and standards.
About you.
  • Working towards or Qualified to HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or Equivalent, with experience of undertaking all types of inspections including the use of NDT techniques for highway structures
  • Qualified as a Inspector on the Bridge Inspector Certification Scheme (NHSS31) or working towards qualification with demonstrable evidence of the core competencies required
  • Proficient in undertaking cyclical and acceptance Inspections and NDT testing techniques
  • Evidence of planning/ organising all types of inspections with good stakeholder management and communication skills with strong customer focus
  • Knowledgeable in the use of defect scoring systems and have an understanding of their use in objectively determining the condition of the asset
