Job description

The Future of Life Institute (FLI) is hiring an Impact Evaluator to design and implement systemic impact evaluation across the organization. This role is crucial for systematically capturing grantee voices and providing data‑driven insights that will shape our strategy. The Impact Evaluator will report to the Director of Operations and collaborate closely with the Grants Manager and the broader Operations team to ensure we achieve measurable outcomes aligned with our mission.

Who we are

FLI educates and engages lawmakers, key stakeholders, and the general public about transformative technologies and their implications. We advocate for policies and approaches that mitigate catastrophic risks while advancing positive futures for humanity.

Responsibilities
  • Design Impact Measurement: develop and refine the organization’s evaluation framework, integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the short‑term and long‑term impact of our grants and programs.
  • Assess the counterfactual impact of each grant: dive deep on each grant to test the theory of change against real‑world impact.
  • Engage with grantees: cultivate strong relationships with grantees, conducting interviews and surveys to gather comprehensive feedback, stories, and data.
  • Evaluate large‑scale communications and policy campaigns: conduct bespoke analysis for major initiatives (e.g., advertising campaigns or outreach to policymakers).
  • Conduct data analysis & reporting: translate raw data, grantee feedback, and field research into actionable insights and compelling reports. Produce reports, case studies, and dashboards for internal learning, funders, and public communications.
  • Collaborate strategically: translate evaluation findings into actionable recommendations for the Grants Manager and leadership team; collaborate to refine grant selection processes, identify strategic gaps, and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
Required Qualifications
  • A degree in an analytical discipline, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in data administration and analytics, sometimes from disjointed data sets, with the ability to produce high‑quality outputs that explain findings clearly.
  • Willingness to overlap at least one hour of your work day with the standard working day in California (PST).
Skills and Qualities Required
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Skills in both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate complex analyses for diverse audiences.
  • Strong relationship‑building and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Project management skills with ability to handle multiple concurrent evaluations.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience designing and applying theories of change.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods, ideally of impact evaluation and reporting within a non‑profit.
  • Experience working within grantmaking functions.
  • Experience evaluating policy advocacy, communications campaigns, or research programs.
  • Familiarity with the AI safety landscape.
Compensation

$82,000 - $150,000 per year. Exact compensation will vary depending on experience and geography.

For U.S. hires, additional benefits include health insurance, 24+ days of PTO per year, paid parental leave, 401(k) matching, and a work‑from‑home allowance for the purchase of office supplies or equipment. Exact benefits will depend on location.
