Icon Books, an expanding and admired independent publisher of non-fiction, seeks an experienced publicist – ideally also with marketing experience – for a critical new role in the company
The Publicity and Marketing Manager will run individual book PR campaigns, liaise and work closely with freelance publicists, and play a key role in maintaining and building Icon’s reputation with the media. They will also be closely involved with the development and promotion of Icon’s series, both established and new.
The ideal candidate will have around five years’ experience of managing publicity for titles at least of a profile akin to those published by Icon. They will have an excellent range of media contacts and be used to working closely with journalists, authors and their agents. They will be used to managing at least one junior colleague, and external freelancers. They will also be responsible for marketing, so experience with trade and consumer marketing, online and off, will be a significant bonus. Excellent communication, internally and externally, is an essential part of the role.
The successful candidate will ensure that publicity and marketing plans are well communicated to all relevant people, and are aligned. They will feel at home with a wide range of narrative non-fiction, though experience in fiction publishing and other areas is a bonus too. They will probably be familiar with Biblio, and adaptable in learning new systems and ways of working.
Icon has a very inclusive attitude to new ideas – in marketing and publicity as throughout the business. The holder of this new position will be closely involved with commissioning editors in the earliest stages of books, helping pitch for titles, and in market research on competition, on covers, blurbs and positioning. They will be central to the revitalisation of books from the company’s backlist, and will work closely with internal and external sales people throughout the world to ensure the company’s books are presented as vibrantly and professionally as possible to booksellers.
This is a position with huge potential to work with fantastic authors and colleagues at a time of expansion.
In return, Icon offers a salary of £35,000 p.a., generous holiday provision, a company pension scheme and an overall performance-related bonus. This position reports to the Associate Publisher.
