Overview

Hospital Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit Technician – University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust. The closing date is 08 October 2025.

University Hospitals of North Midlands is currently unable to provide sponsorship for Band 2 and Band 3 roles. This is in accordance with UKVI guidelines and legislation, as these roles do not meet the skill nor salary threshold for sponsorship. If you hold a graduate visa, you are welcome to apply for this role; however UHNM will be unable to offer sponsorship at the end of your graduate visa. You must also have at least six months until your graduate visa expires at the start of your employment for training and operational reasons.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the position of Hospital Sterilisation and Disinfection (HSDU) Technician working at the County site. Cover will also be provided at the Royal Stoke site as required. This is a fully flexible job role and shift patterns may be changed at short notice.

Shift Patterns:

  • Days: 06:00 - 12:00
  • Twilight: 16:00 - 22:00
  • Nights: 22:00 - 04:00

Saturday working is incorporated within working hours, and will be between 08:00 - 14:00 or 16:00 - 20:00.

Sunday working is incorporated within working hours, and will be between Day shift – hours TBA or 22:00 - 04:00 as part of one of the night shift rota.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be required to work permanent weekends with a back fill day off in the week. On call and bank holiday working on rota are essential. Pay scale – Band 2 plus enhancement pay after 20:00 to 06:00 as per Agenda for Change terms and conditions. Weekends are also at an enhanced rate. The job offers practical and busy work within the Health Service for North Midlands.

The Hospital Sterilisation and Disinfection Unit services include the supply and maintenance of surgical instruments used in surgical and medical procedures. These items are checked into the department after use, then are cleaned, disinfected, packaged, sterilised and delivered back to operating theatres, wards, departments, clinics and GP surgeries.

Applicants should have a good standard of education with literacy and numeracy skills and basic computer skills, as the position involves daily use of a PC. You will be required to read small letters on instruments and follow written instructions. There will be a short test as part of the interview process and a full tour of the unit will be given. No experience is necessary as you will receive full in-house training. The successful candidate will have high standards, show a genuine interest in healthcare and patient safety, and be able to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines.
