About the Role

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join a dynamic SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school in Middlewich. This is a full-time opportunity for an individual who thrives on making a real difference in the lives of young people who require additional emotional and behavioural support.

You will work closely with class teachers and pastoral staff to deliver high-quality support, small group interventions, and tailored learning experiences that help students achieve their potential both academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

• Support teaching and learning across the curriculum under the direction of the class teacher.
• Lead small group or 1:1 interventions to promote academic, social, and emotional progress.
• Assist in planning, delivering, and evaluating lessons and activities.
• Foster positive relationships and manage challenging behaviour using de-escalation strategies.
• Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teachers and parents where appropriate.
• Supervise classes during teacher absence and ensure a safe, inclusive learning environment.
• Contribute to the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
• Collaborate with teaching staff, SENCO, and external agencies to support pupil wellbeing and development.

Must-Have Skills & Experience

• HLTA qualification or equivalent experience supporting learning at a higher level.
• Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, autism, or behavioural needs.
• Strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to stay calm under pressure and use positive behaviour management techniques.
• Good literacy, numeracy, and ICT skills.

Good to Have

• Experience working in a special school or alternative provision setting.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed and restorative practices.
• Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or other behaviour management approaches.
• Understanding of EHCPs and differentiated learning strategies.

Nice to Have

• First Aid or Mental Health First Aid qualification.
• Experience supporting speech and language or sensory needs.
• A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers to learning and develop confidence.
