Job description

Poolhall Recruitment currently has vacancies for our client in their Highway Maintenance team for General Operatives.

The majority of the work is in the South East, so candidates MUST be able to work away from home during the working week. Accommodation and subsistence for food are included.

This is a full-time permanent position following a temp-to-perm period via an agency start. Starting as a highway general operative, this role offers the chance to grow and earn more as experience is gained on the job.

Following a successful temp-to-perm period, there is an opportunity to gain further qualifications and increase earning potential within the business.

The initial day rate is GBP 115, and the night rate is GBP 149.50. As you gain more experience, you can earn more with different bandings. Please see below for examples:

Band 7:

Day shift GBP 132.30

Night shift GBP 171.99

Band 6:

Day shift GBP 143.33

Night shift GBP 186.32

Job Details

You will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of our client’s highway network. Your tasks will include maintaining highway verges, tidying and maintaining vegetation, and delivering drainage reports using radar scanning equipment and compiling reports.

The needs of our customers and members of the public come first. You will respond to and resolve issues raised, and communicate with other departments and contract partners.

Main Accountabilities

• Perform assigned tasks efficiently and safely, including general labouring, GPS surveying, vegetation clearance, drainage surveys, and asset inspections in line with company, project, and statutory requirements.
• Operate and maintain tools and equipment safely and correctly.
• Work effectively as part of a team, supporting colleagues and maintaining a productive environment.
• Participate in daily briefings.
• Operate company vehicles safely, following company requirements and legal standards.
• Adhere to all SHEQ policies, procedures, documentation, and legislation.
• Accurately collect and record all required data in the specified formats.

Experience

• Previous groundworks, construction, or highways operative work.
• CSCS qualifications.
• Experience using standard tools and equipment.
• A full UK driving license.
• Highways Passport, Safety Critical Medical, and First Aid certification are advantageous.
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in various weather conditions.
• Good understanding of health and safety practices.
• Ability to read and follow site plans and instructions.
• Proficiency with technology (apps/tablets) and Microsoft applications.
