Overview

Chelsea and Westminster NHS Foundation Trust sexual health and HIV centres are modern clinics in West London and we are looking to recruit health care assistants to join the team and service. This role is a rare opportunity to develop skills in both sexual health and HIV. These posts are based at the following sites, so please request your preferred site on the application: 10 Hammersmith Broadway.

The main aspects of the role include clinical duties including direct patient care under supervision, assisting the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of a high standard of care to patients attending for sexual, reproductive health and HIV care. Other aspects include housekeeping and administration duties and overseeing the maintenance of a safe environment for both patients and staff.

We are looking for an individual who is motivated, enthusiastic and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with the ability to work with a team in an innovative sexual health setting.

In return, you will join a team of friendly skilled experienced doctors, sexual health / HIV nurses, health advisers and admin staff responsible for delivering a high standard of care to patients. We have a full in-house and Multidisciplinary Education programme.

The post holder will be expected to work flexibly within the clinic and at outreach settings in the local community when applicable.

Responsibilities
  • Under direct supervision, assist with the delivery of care as described by the Registered Nurse.
  • Assist patients with general hygiene needs, reporting any changes in patients’ condition.
  • Process patient samples.
  • Safeguard patients’ belongings and space.
  • Under supervision, take and record the patient’s observations (e.g. temperature, skin assessment) as required, and inform the registered nurse of any observed changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Support the Registered Nurse in meeting and recording patients’ elimination needs; report changes and record quantities and frequency on relevant charts.
  • Work with the Registered Nurse to gain knowledge of pressure area care and the use of aids, and mobilisation aids and their correct and safe use.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in moving, handling and positioning of patients to meet clinical need, adhering to the Trust Moving and Handling policy.
  • Report physical and psychological changes in patient condition to the Registered Nurse; ensure pain and distress are acted on promptly.
  • Be aware of patient dietary needs and adhere to patient protected mealtimes; deliver meals and provide drinks to patients as appropriate and record food intake (inpatient only).
  • Report changes of pattern to the Registered Nurse and relay relevant information regarding patient care.
  • Assist the Registered Nurse in caring for dying and deceased patients, providing support to relatives/friends and patients who have received bad news.
  • Support the Registered Nurse in health promotion/education (e.g., prevention of pressure ulcers, DVT); see Skills/Competency information for details.
Housekeeping and Environmental Care
  • Ensure the environment is clean, comfortable, safe, and welcoming to patients, relatives and staff (prepare bed spaces, wash beds, chairs and lockers, and prepare unoccupied beds).
  • Clean and maintain equipment and keep stock levels aware; keep storage areas clean and tidy.
  • Report faulty equipment and deliver specimens, test requests, notes or charts as requested.
  • Escort patients to other departments as required and protect valuables in line with Trust policy.
Infection Control
  • Be aware of infection control techniques and safe disposal of sharps; follow universal safety practices for spillages.
  • Dispose of body fluids, soiled linen, clothing in line with policy and regulations.
Clerical and Reception
  • Undertake delegated clerical duties in the absence of ward Clerk.
  • Demonstrate effective communication; liaise with administrative, nursing, medical staff and visitors; maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Redirect patient enquiries outside your scope to the Registered Nurse; assist in completing PET (Patient Experience Tracker) and file patient documentation.
  • Answer telephone calls and redirect enquiries in the ward Clerk’s absence.
Education and Development
  • Undertake ward/departmental induction; complete competency booklet within 2 months; follow up with appraisal at 3 months.
  • Work with manager for an appraisal and Personal Development Plan after 3 months; complete Essence of Care Programme and NVQ Level 2 as appropriate; attend relevant training and participate in team meetings.
Quality Improvement / Clinical Governance
  • Assist or participate in departmental and Trust quality/improvement initiatives or audits; participate in orientation and educational programs for new staff; engage in personal and professional development activities as negotiated with the Ward/Department.

  • Work within legislation and local procedures (HR Act, Data Protection Act, Caldicott guidelines); demonstrate awareness of culture, equality and diversity; maintain dignity and privacy; provide non-discriminatory care; respect religious beliefs and customs; support vulnerable patients and their safety.
