Overview

Exciting opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join the Respiratory & Sleep Service at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, primarily based within Royal Blackburn Hospital, Burnley General and Rossendale Health Centre. The successful candidate should possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to demonstrate a problem-solving approach, and be flexible to work across the pathways of care within clinical settings of Respiratory. The Respiratory & Sleep Service operates across multiple sites and carries out a wide variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and investigations, delivering high standards of care to all patients.

Responsibilities
  • Provide competent assistance during a range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and ensure support and reassurance to patients undergoing them.
  • Perform blood gases, basic spirometry and sleep studies with supervision from registered staff.
  • Gain understanding of and participate in the decontamination processes of all equipment and understand general and specific infection control measures and related issues.
  • Participate in moving & handling needs of patients.
  • Demonstrate competent IT skills.
  • Assist in general cleaning of clinical areas and equipment in accordance with infection control policies.
  • Assist in maintenance of adequate stock levels.
  • Work alongside the wider MDT.
  • Carry out delegated, appropriate therapeutic interventions as requested by a Nurse, Physiotherapist or Healthy Lifestyle Officer; feed back information regarding patient progress. Work will take place in a variety of settings including hospitals, community and primary care settings.
Qualifications
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
  • HCA training day.
  • Willingness to undertake training (e.g., spirometry course, sleep course, blood gas training).
  • Desirable: NVQ 3 in a care-related field or equivalent + previous experience in an acute health care setting.
  • Desirable: Experience of delivering formal and informal education; proven ability to manage priorities under pressure; proven ability to understand and comply with detailed procedures.
  • Desirable: Good standard of education; previous experience within a healthcare setting; IT skills.
  • Desirable criteria: Lone working; experience of disability; NVQ care certificate.
