Job responsibilities

Primary Duties and Areas of Responsibility

  • New patient health checks
  • ECG recording
  • Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses
  • Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment
  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
  • Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
  • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions, including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
  • Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being
  • Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
  • Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
  • Assisting with the collection and collation of data on needs related to health and well-being

Qualifications
  • Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant or in a patient-facing healthcare role
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; able to interact professionally with patients, families, and the healthcare team
  • Caring and compassionate approach, with a genuine interest in patient wellbeing
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
  • Basic clinical skills, including:
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Height and weight measurement
  • Assisting with basic clinical procedures
  • Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures accurately
  • Strong organisational skills and effective time management
  • IT literacy and ability to learn clinical systems (e.g. EMIS or similar)
  • Understanding of infection control, health and safety, and hygiene standards
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the service
  • Willingness to undertake mandatory training and ongoing professional development
  • Good level of spoken and written English
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Previous experience working in a general practice or primary care setting
  • Phlebotomy training and recent experience in taking bloods

  • Weight management
  • Other health promotion initiatives
  • Understanding of long-term condition monitoring, such as diabetes or hypertension
  • Experience assisting with immunisation clinics (e.g. flu or COVID)
  • Up-to-date Basic Life Support (BLS) and manual handling training
  • Awareness of CQC standards, clinical governance, and safeguarding procedures
  • Ability to adapt to a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment
  • Confidence in working autonomously as well as collaboratively
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and training
