Job description

To provide a high quality venipuncture and blood sampling service for patients of Malvern Family Practice.

Responsibilities
  • To provide a full and comprehensive venipuncture and sampling service with due regard to procedures governing safe clinical practice, confidentiality, cross infection and Health & Safety and to show respect for the dignity and comfort of the patients
  • To provide an efficient and accurate sampling service on all patients
  • To be individually responsible for carrying out procedures for the labelling and recording of specimens ensuring accuracy and sage practice according to established protocols
  • To have full working knowledge of blood collection tubes, forms and systems
  • To have a thorough knowledge of the appropriate range of tests for each container and to ensure that appropriate blood volumes are collected
  • To work as part of a multidisciplinary team liaising with medical, nursing, administration and laboratory staff
  • To communicate effectively with patients, parents and relatives
  • To understand and implement when required blood spill protocol and management of same
  • Cleaning and maintenance of clinical equipment
  • Reporting faults in line with practice protocol
  • Correct disposal and replacement of sharp bins in line with policies and procedures
