Role: Group Transport Manager

Salary: £45,000 and above. Plus Benefits

Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hour week.

Role Summary

We are looking for an experienced Group Transport Manager to join our team at Frank Key Builders Merchants. You will take responsibility for ensuring that the transport operation is safe, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective across all branches of the Group. You will report to the Group Operations Manager and support delivering to customers while maintaining high standards of service and compliance.

Responsibilities
  • Hold and maintain the company's O Licence, ensuring compliance with Operator Licence regulations and Traffic Commissioner requirements.
  • Oversee the legal compliance of all vehicles, drivers, and lifting equipment; ensure they are licensed, serviced, taxed, insured, and defect-free.
  • Manage the Vehicle Management System (VMS) and keep all fleet and lifting equipment records up to date.
  • Take ownership of the transport budget, identify cost-saving opportunities, manage fuel procurement, and develop the digitalisation of the transport function.
  • Lead on RTC accident/incident investigations, work with insurers, analyse trends, and implement preventative measures.
  • Oversee central routing to maximise vehicle utilisation and minimise lost runs.
  • Oversee recruitment and training of drivers, ensuring qualifications, digital tachograph requirements, and safety training are up to date.
  • Manage vehicle acquisitions and disposals to ensure fit-for-purpose and cost-effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure the business remains legally compliant.
  • Drive efficiency in routing, fuel use, and fleet utilisation.
  • Deliver high standards of driver performance, safety, and training.
  • Manage customer complaints and service escalations where transport is involved.
  • Track and report on KPIs including vehicle checks, utilisation rates, on-time deliveries, driver performance, and incident analysis.
About You

Frank Key Builders Merchants are looking for someone who can balance compliance, safety, and operational efficiency while leading a team with confidence.

  • A Transport Manager CPC - Standard Level minimum (O Licence qualification).
  • Relevant CPD certificates to support qualification if over 5 years old.
  • Proven experience in managing transport operations, ideally within a builders' merchant, logistics, or distribution environment.
  • Strong knowledge of compliance, tachograph regulations, vehicle maintenance, and fleet management.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to influence, train, and support branch managers and drivers.
  • A results-driven approach with experience of managing budgets, analysing costs, and implementing cost-saving measures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, particularly around routing, incidents, and customer service challenges.
