Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant – SEMH Support (Primary School)

Are you a psychology graduate looking to kick‑start your career in education or child development? Do you have a passion for supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? If so, this role is perfect for you!

We are working with a welcoming primary school in Rochdale that is seeking enthusiastic graduates to join their team as Teaching Assistants. No prior experience is required – just energy, empathy, and a genuine desire to make a difference. In this role you will be supporting children with SEMH needs which include Challenging behaviour, High Anxiety, Anxiety based school avoidance and Mental Health Conditions such as Low Self‑esteem, Attachment difficulties and Emotional Dysregulation.

About the Role

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils with SEMH and additional needs in the classroom and during activities.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships to help children feel safe and understood.
  • Assist with behaviour management strategies and emotional regulation.
  • Deliver 1:1 and small group interventions under teacher guidance.
  • Adapt learning resources to meet individual needs.
  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to teachers and SENCO.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and support staff to create an inclusive environment.
  • Promote resilience, confidence, and social skills through structured activities.
What We’re Looking For
  • A recent Psychology graduate (or related field).
  • Passion for working with children and supporting their emotional and educational development.
  • Patience, empathy, and a proactive attitude.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfare.
  • An Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • References covering the last 24 months
