JOB DESCRIPTION FOR FULL-TIME CLINICAL FELLOWS AT FOUNDATION LEVEL IN GENERAL SURGERY

DESCRIPTION OF THE POST

Clinical fellow posts offer an excellent opportunity to gain clinical experience, develop procedural skills, perform quality improvement work and work towards completion of Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training (CREST). They can also provide training tailored to an individual’s needs to enhance their CV and portfolio.

This post will be based in the surgical department at Ninewells Hospital. This covers elective and emergency surgery in oesophagogastric, hepatobiliary, colorectal and vascular surgery, as well as urology. Depending on level of experience, you may also work in the surgical high dependency unit (SHDU). In addition, all doctors at foundation level within the department, rotate to Perth Royal Infirmary, which provides elective general surgery.

The successful candidate will provide a contribution to out of hours and weekend rotas covering the surgical department.

Although these posts are not recognised training posts, the doctor will have a nominated supervisor and access to all local training and teaching opportunities.

Applications will be considered for appointment at Foundation Level (FY1).

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in a welcoming and forward‑thinking department. The intention of the position is to increase doctors’ experience of NHS practice, develop their clinical skills and ensure a competitive portfolio prior to application to the national recruitment processes.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties involve the clinical care of acute and elective admissions to the surgical department with participation in an emergency rota and SHDU cover, providing critical care experience.

The rotas are compliant with the European Working Time Directive. All Foundation doctor and Clinical fellow rotas operate on a shift pattern.

TRAINING APPROVAL

These posts are not recognised for training but have been designed to support future employment status including developing CVs and portfolios to support application for Core or Specialty training and are built on sound educational governance principles.

Whilst this post does not have a study leave budget, successful candidates will be granted 5 days of study leave for approved courses.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

The appointment is for a full‑time post. The contract will be from date of commencement until 04 August 2026.

The offer of appointment is subject to the post holder undergoing relevant clearances and health checks.

Full GMC Registration and a Licence to Practise are required.
