Job summary

A general practice surgery in Redditch is seeking a Health Care Assistant. Duties include performing phlebotomy, administering vaccines, and assisting with patient care. Candidates should have experience in general practice and phlebotomy qualifications. This is a permanent part-time position offering competitive pay (£12.65/hour) and benefits such as 5 weeks annual leave. Training will be provided for clinical systems prior to any patient contact.

Job Summary

Duties will include Phlebotomy, Blood Pressure & ECGs, additional Clinical duties including B12 injections, Flu Vaccinations, Dressings, Removal of Clips/Sutures, Diabetic Foot Checks & NHS Health Checks, as well as assisting medical personnel in patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Obtain patient consent for procedures.
  • Venipuncture in accordance with practice protocols; blood pressure measurement.
  • Administer ECGs.
  • Administer B12 injections.
  • Administer flu vaccinations.
  • Apply dressings.
  • Remove clips/sutures.
  • Perform diabetic foot checks.
  • Conduct NHS health checks.
  • Maintain accurate patient records on the medical system.
  • Label, package, and store samples correctly.
  • Ensure timely laboratory sample submission.
  • Perform chaperoning duties.
  • Store, monitor, and record vaccine/cold chain stock.
  • Order medical supplies as requested by clinicians.
  • Clear and restock treatment rooms.
  • Maintain surgical equipment.
  • Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly and sharps bins are ready for collection.
  • Order and display health promotional materials.
  • Record height, weight, urine and blood pressures of patients as required.
  • Perform new patient health checks.
  • Assist in seasonal projects (eg. flu campaign).
  • Assist doctors and nurses with minor surgical procedures.
  • Any other delegated duties considered appropriate to the post.
Training

Previous evidence of skills is essential, but further clinical system training will be provided in house initially. Full training of the clinical system will be given prior to any patient contact.

Accountability

Although accountable to the Partners of the Practice through the Practice Manager as an employee, the HCA/NA is ultimately responsible for their own practice and must ensure that limitations are always acknowledged. Full training will be provided for any clinical procedures.

Administration & Communication

Enter details of all patient contacts and procedures accurately into the computer. Record stock control and instrument sterilisation where necessary. Participate in audits where appropriate. Liaise closely with Reception and other members of the Surgery Team. Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising alternative communication needs.

  • Proficiency in Emis, Docman and ICE.
Experience

Essential:

  • Experience working in General Practice.
  • Phlebotomy qualifications.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of QoF and GMS Contracts.
Benefits

Competitive salary, 5 weeks annual leave and study/course budget. 20 hours per week part‐time (Thursday and Friday). Pay: £12.65 an hour.
