Job description
Welsh Mountain Zoo - National Zoological Society of Wales

Welsh Mountain Zoo is seeking a passionate and skilled Gardener to care for our gardens, woodlands, and seasonal displays. This is a 40 hours per week role in a dynamic environment where horticultural work supports our mission to educate the public and conserve wildlife.

Responsibilities
  • Propagation, greenhouse work, planting, pruning, weeding, watering, feeding, composting, and grounds maintenance
  • Monitoring plant health and managing pests using Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Maintaining woodlands, hedges, lawns, and trees safely
  • Implementing eco-friendly practices such as native planting, efficient watering, and composting
  • Receiving and storing horticultural deliveries
  • Supporting visitor engagement through professional and helpful interaction
  • Following health and safety procedures and risk assessments
  • Using tools, machinery, and substances safely in line with training and COSHH guidelines
Qualifications and Skills
  • Practical gardening and grounds maintenance experience including propagation, planting, pruning, weeding, watering, feeding, composting, cutting, edging, and strimming
  • Knowledge of plant care, soil health, irrigation, and pest control
  • Familiarity with eco-friendly horticultural practices
  • Ability to use a range of horticultural tools and machinery (certification advantageous)
  • Level 2 horticulture qualification (or working towards)
  • Clean driving licence and ability to drive a tractor with trailer or cutting deck
  • Physical fitness for outdoor work in all weather
  • Basic IT skills for records and training
  • Excellent teamworking skills and the ability to work independently
