Applications are sought for a 10 PA fixed term consultant post in renal medicine. This consultant job has been created to cover the increasing workload in the department. It is for 6 months in the first instance, with a view to extend. The long term plan is to increase the substantive workforce for renal medicine.
The successful applicant will be based at the Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) in the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton and the eastern Sussex area, working for University Hospitals Sussex (UHS). They may also undertake other roles within the catchment area of the Sussex Kidney Unit
The successful applicant will become part of the consultant team doing general nephrology in the east of our catchment area in our Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit. They will do specialty clinics which include vasculitis and transplantation in the Brighton hub.
They will be responsible for a cohort for haemodialysis patients in the main renal dialysis unit.
The successful applicant will be involved in renal procedures at the RSCH involving native and transplant biopsies.
There is no general medical component to this job.
The applicant will be involved in the renal on-call rota at the RSCH managing renal in-patients on the ward, outliers and referrals from elsewhere in the catchment area of SKU on a 1:9-11 basis.
The position is currently vacant from May 2025 and we look to seek an appointment as soon as we can.
The post holder will work as part of the Sussex Kidney Unit and contribute to the development of the unit both within University Hospitals Sussex and the wider nephrology community. The post holder will be one of eleven full time renal consultants based at the Sussex Kidney Unit in Brighton with an office there. The successful applicant will work in Brighton and in the eastern area of our catchment in the Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit but may also need to travel to do clinics within our whole SKU catchment area. The successful applicant will form part of the renal consultant team who deliver outreach general nephrology clinics in the Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit seeing new and follow up patients.

The Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) sits within the University Hospitals Sussex Specialist Services Division. SKU provides specialist renal services for the whole of East Sussex and the majority of West Sussex, with a catchment population of 1.2 million. The SKU is a tertiary referral centre, taking referrals from Eastbourne ESHT, Conquest/Hastings ESHT, Queen Victoria/East Grinstead, East Surrey/Redhill, Princess Royal Hospital/ Haywards Heath and Worthing Hospitals.
