Key Qualifications
- Valid STCW 95 certification.
- Valid ASE Certification A-III/5.
- Good knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, operation and maintenance of vessel machinery and mechanical equipment.
- Experience with stripping engines down and rebuilding.
- Experience on vessels in an equivalent position.
- Physically and medically fit. Moral integrity is required.
- Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical).
Responsibilities
- Performs major and specialised mechanical overhaul and repair work to determine the need for further repairs or adjustments.
- Repairs and maintains hydraulic equipment and valves.
- Prevents spares and tools from being damaged due to poor handling.
- Provides installation and breakdown services.
- Participates in technical loading during intake of provisions and provides technical assistance during ship’s tendering operations.
- Assists with general maintenance (includes cleaning, painting, repairs).
- Keeps the Chief Engineer, Staff Engineer and duty Engineer promptly and fully informed of problems and deficiencies affecting machinery or safety.
- Competent in using internal communications systems and knowledgeable about engine room alarms.
- Inform on-duty Engineer before leaving the engine room to perform duties elsewhere.
- Keeps supervisors informed of progress and any defects in their area of responsibility.
- Maintains cleanliness of engine room and machinery spaces, parts and tools.
- Ensures compliance with Company, Public Health, National and International standards; reports any non-compliance.
- Observes uniform and grooming standards; informs team of occurrences during watch.
- Practices good people management and professional conduct within the Engine department and other shipboard departments.
- Performs general engine room duties as assigned by supervisors.
Language
- English: working and safety language on board; ability to give/receive instructions in verbal and written form. Additional languages are beneficial.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Stand, walk long distances, reach and sit; repetitive bending; climb ladders; lift or push up to 50 lbs.
- Overtime and irregular schedules; work in Engine Control Room and engine spaces with noise and distractions.
