The Business

Our client is an established, privately owned equipment business with a strong reputation in power generation and construction plant. They support a loyal customer base with installation, servicing and breakdown support for diesel generator sets and associated equipment.

They’re now looking for a Field Service Engineer to strengthen their powergen team and support continued growth in the region.

The Role

Working as a mobile engineer, you’ll service, maintain and repair diesel generator sets at customer sites. You’ll handle a mix of planned maintenance, project support and emergency breakdowns, acting as the main on‑site contact for customers.

You’ll be based from home with a fully equipped service van, covering a regional patch and occasionally working out‑of‑hours as part of a call‑out rota.

Key Responsibilities
  • Service, repair and fault‑find on diesel generator sets on customer sites.
  • Carry out site surveys, assist with installations and support commissioning.
  • Work on control panels, wiring and basic PLC/controller programming (e.g. Deep Sea / Deif or similar).
  • Perform loadbank testing on a range of generator sizes.
  • Complete accurate job reports and parts usage on PDA / laptop.
  • Represent the business professionally and build strong customer relationships.
About You
  • NVQ Level 2+ (or equivalent) in plant, mechanical, electrical or similar engineering.
  • Experience with diesel engines, generators, plant or off‑highway equipment.
  • Good understanding of mechanical and electrical systems (engines, alternators, control panels, wiring, hydraulics, transmissions).
  • Generator control systems / PLC‑style controller experience is a bonus.
  • 18th Edition / IEE regs beneficial but not essential.
  • Confident working independently in the field and managing your own workload.
  • Strong customer focus, good communicator and comfortable under pressure.
  • Flexible towards overtime, call‑outs and occasional unsociable hours.
  • Full UK driving licence and right to work in the UK.
  • Based within ~30 minutes of the depot / territory.
What's on Offer
  • £17.00 – £20.00 per hour (DOE) + enhanced overtime rates.
  • Company van and fuel card (with option for personal use).
  • Auto‑enrolment pension.
  • 22 days' holiday + bank holidays, with extra days for long service.
  • Company sick pay scheme.
  • Call‑out / standby payments.
  • Tool allowance, uniform, mobile / PDA / laptop and PPE.
  • Ongoing technical training, clear progression routes and manufacturer‑led development.
  • Additional benefits including private medical (contributory) and employee support schemes (after qualifying period).
