Job summary

A community support organization is seeking a Personal Assistant to help a woman recovering from a brain haemorrhage. This role involves supporting her daily activities and encouraging independence. We seek an individual with compassion and a genuine interest in assisting those with disabilities. The work requires flexibility in hours and the ability to drive. Candidates must maintain confidentiality and have a reliable and supportive approach. Experience with brain injuries is a plus, but not required.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of the care needs of a hemiplegic person.
  • Full driving licence and access to a car suitable for a collapsible wheelchair.
  • Previous caring experience not essential but a genuine interest in supporting people with disabilities.

Job description
Overview

We are looking for a kind, reliable and practical Personal Assistant to support a woman who experienced a brain haemorrhage five years ago and now lives with both cognitive and physical disabilities. She is warm, engaging and enjoys getting out into the community when possible. Support is needed at home and occasionally outside the home, especially when her husband is at work. This is a hands‑on role that suits someone who is patient, organised, a good conversationist, and genuinely committed to supporting someone to live as independently as possible.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support and/or prompt with cooking/meal preparation and eating meals/drinks.
  • Assist with household chores and general homemaking.
  • Support and/or prompt to attend appointments as necessary, e.g. hospital/doctors.
  • Support with food shopping.
  • Support the individual to look after/care for pets.
  • Support to get to and from school/work/college/social activities.
  • Support and/or prompt the individual to access sporting and leisure activities.
  • Assist and encourage socialisation, participating in activities.
  • Promote and encourage friendships and independence.
  • Develop a good and trusting one‑to‑one working relationship.
  • Support with managing paperwork & correspondence.
  • Support with gardening.
  • Assist with medical or other appointments when needed.
  • Provide support with daily physiotherapy exercises as directed by a professional.
  • Assist with moving and handling tasks.

The individual's needs may vary from day to day and your tasks may reflect this. You could be required to perform other duties as reasonably required.

You have a responsibility as an employee to report all accidents to the employer immediately. You have a duty to report defects and/or hazards which may give rise to an accident. You are to ensure the safety of the individual at all times.

Transport Requirement: Car driver and car owner – must have business insurance.

Essential Skills & Qualities
  • Understanding of the care needs of a hemiplegic person who uses a manual wheelchair.
  • Patience, empathy and sensitivity, especially around memory or cognitive difficulties.
  • Full driving licence and access to a suitable car (large enough for a collapsible wheelchair).
  • Confidence and physical ability to push a manual wheelchair across different terrains.
  • Good communication skills and ability to hold supportive, friendly conversation.
  • Liking for and willingness to get on with dogs.
  • Be honest, reliable, trustworthy and punctual.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect privacy, including the prohibited use of social media in relation to the job role.
  • Work on own initiative.
  • Be part of a team.
  • Follow instructions accurately.
  • Be patient, supportive and caring.
  • Good listening skills and provide non‑judgemental emotional support.
  • Be empathetic.
  • Previous caring experience is not essential, however have a genuine interest in supporting people with a disability/illness to achieve their goals.
  • Be able to work flexibly, adapting to the employer’s needs on a daily basis.
  • Flexibility would be an advantage as the hours may be variable.
  • Be self‑motivated with a willingness to get involved.
  • Have a lively personality.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience working with people who have experienced brain injuries.
  • Computer, web design and social media skills (to help with an on‑going project the client has been working on).
Working Arrangements

Hourly Rate of pay: £16.00 per hour.
Hours per week: 4–8
Dates and times are flexible and can be discussed at interview.

Successful candidates are required to undertake training that is considered necessary and appropriate to the role (including moving and handling).
