A leading solutions provider in Basingstoke is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to promote safe working conditions. You will support site leadership and develop EHS programs while collaborating with personnel across the UK and Ireland. The ideal candidate should have 2-4 years of relevant experience or a NEBOSH qualification. Fluent English is required, and knowledge of French or Dutch is advantageous. This role is onsite, 5 days a week.

The UL Solutions Safety & Sustainability Team in the UK & Ireland is seeking an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to support our site leadership and site safety officers across our 2 main laboratories in the UK (Basingstoke & Telford) and other UL Solutions office locations across the UK and Ireland. The successful candidate will form part of a small Environmental, Health and Safety Team serving the company’s needs in the Europe region as well.

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist role is critical in establishing and promoting safe and healthy working conditions for all of our employees. Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision of the Regional EHS Manager, Europe, responsible for supporting the site leadership as well as establishing and promoting safe and healthy working conditions for all employees
  • Investigates conditions that may affect employee health and comfort
  • Under general supervision, develops documents and maintains environmental health and safety (EHS) programs (e.g. hazardous materials, emergency response plans) in compliance with Federal, State and Local legislation
  • Assists in conducting inspections and reports on tests and investigations to obtain data for use in determining sources of pollution and methods for controlling pollutants
  • Assists in analysis, interpretation and validation of information on hazardous materials/chemicals and exposure monitoring results
  • Assists in creating training programs and instructing employees in matters pertaining to occupational health, prevention of accidents, safe operation of equipment and proper handling/cleanup of chemicals and hazardous materials
  • Ensures that all employees have and are trained in the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, safety glasses and safety shoes
  • Reads and follows the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follows all physical and digital security practices
  • Frequent use of computers and office equipment is required.
Qualifications
  • Around 2 - 4 years of directly related environmental & health and safety experience. Alternatively, if you have NEBOSH qualifications with 5 - 7 years+ of directly related experience, we'd also like to hear from you.
  • University Degree (preferred: Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety & Health, Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Chemical / Environmental / Mechanical Engineering
  • Fluent English (written and spoken). French or Dutch would be an added advantage
  • Some knowledge and awareness of both UK as well as EU Safety Directives and safety regulations would be an advantage (Will be supported in this aspect)
  • Experience in risk assessments and/or in chemical environment
  • Experience in working with stakeholders at all levels would be an advantage
  • Great communications skills, ability to build strong relationships and trust
  • Ability to solve problems and understand different points of view
  • People person with a strong focus on cooperation
  • Preferably located in Basingstoke or within commuting distance. Availability to travel across Europe (around 20%)
  • Physical Demands of the role to be aware of:
  • Ability to stand and walk extensively (concrete floors) for up to 2 hour periods, several times a day is required.
  • Ability to move safely over uneven terrain; ascend/descend stairs/ladders/scaffolding required.
  • Ability to lift up to 30lbs assisted or unassisted, pushing; pulling; bending; reaching; handling; stooping; working in tight spaces and working in hot/cold environments will occasionally be required in lab, office and outside environments.
  • Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond quickly.
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment when required, while performing select duties.
  • This is an onsite role in Basingstoke, 5 days per week.
