Overview

King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking 3 ENT consultants to join the growing Surgery, Theatres, Anaesthetics, and Endoscopy (STAE) Care Group at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH). The role is a full-time, permanent appointment (10 PAs) with sub-speciality interests in otology or head and neck surgery.

Site: PRUH & South Sites. Closing date: 30 September 2025.

Main duties of the job
  1. Together with other colleagues, to provide a high quality care service to patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
  2. Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues during annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in the contract.
  3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
  4. Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
  5. Outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Groups management team where part of the service structure.
  6. Contribute to the Care Groups research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
  7. Contribute to audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
  8. Take an active role in formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan, including discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
  9. Operate within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
  10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, fostering projects and ensuring ongoing post-qualification education and training.
  11. Work with clinical and other colleagues to maintain staff productivity and job satisfaction, including involvement in appraisal of peers and/or junior colleagues.
  12. Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
  13. Be aware of and comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental practices.
  14. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions consistent with evidence-based practice and patient safety.
  15. Kings is committed to providing Consultant-led 7-day services; the post holder would be expected to contribute equally with other Consultant colleagues in future developments.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Ability to function as a general ENT surgeon at consultant level.
  • FRCS (ENT) or equivalent specialty-specific higher degree
  • Distinctions, scholarships, prizes, other degrees (e.g., BSc, MSc, MS)
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
  • Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment
Clinical Experience
  • Broad experience in all aspects of ENT surgery
  • Evidence of specific training in Head & Neck Surgery or Otology
  • Award of Certificate of Completion of Training or CESR by GMC
Clinical Audit
  • Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit
  • Must have undertaken and completed audit projects
  • Audit publications
Teaching Experience
  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation
  • Teaching skills course/qualification
Management and Administrative Experience
  • Experience in day-to-day organisation of ENT services in a busy District General Hospital
  • Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills
  • Familiar with current structure of the UK NHS and recent initiatives
  • Able to demonstrate leadership within multi-disciplinary teams
Research
  • Experience of clinical research
  • Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
  • Relevant research experience
  • On the day of interview, applicants should be within 6 months of CCT or fully completed CESR and registered with the GMC Specialist Register
