Job description

The Adult Education Service is part of Coventry City Council. We provide a wide range of courses for Coventry residents age 19+ and much of our provision is targeted at people with the highest levels of need. We offer long courses in English, maths, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), ICT/Digital and vocational subjects such as Early Years, along with provision for adults with learning disabilities. We also offer a very wide range of short community courses in arts, crafts, music, dance, exercise, fitness and family learning. In addition, we run a highly supportive study programme for young people. Our work‑based learning offer includes Apprenticeships in the following subject areas: Nursery Workers, Teaching Assistants, Leadership/Management, and Customer Care. We also provide courses for adults who are seeking work via the Council’s Job Shop. Our main base is at Southfields Old School, CV1 5EJ, with provision delivered at around 25 other sites within Coventry, mostly in areas of highest need. What is the job role?

This role is FTC until 31st August 2026. The Attendance Team Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting learners aged 16–24 to engage consistently in their education. This role involves daily monitoring of attendance, identifying barriers to engagement, and working closely with learners, parents/carers, and staff to promote positive attendance habits. It is a demanding yet highly rewarding position, especially as progress becomes visible over time.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attendance Monitoring: Track and record daily attendance, promptly follow up on absences, and ensure reasons for non‑attendance are understood and documented.
  • Learner Engagement: Encourage and motivate learners to attend regularly, using tailored strategies to support those who may struggle.
  • Support for Additional Needs: Work with learners who have learning needs or an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), ensuring appropriate support strategies are in place.
  • Communication with Parents/Carers: Maintain regular contact with families to address attendance concerns, provide updates, and build positive relationships to support learner success.
  • Home Visits (where appropriate): Conduct safe and professional home visits to check on learner welfare and discuss attendance barriers.
  • Safeguarding: Follow safeguarding procedures at all times, escalating concerns immediately and appropriately.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Delivery Manager and wider staff team, adhering to all organisational policies and procedures.
  • Strategy and Intervention: Implement attendance strategies, monitor their effectiveness, and adjust approaches when needed to ensure learners remain engaged.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a motivated, approachable, and proactive individual who is passionate about supporting young people aged 16–24 to re‑engage with education. The ideal candidate will be resilient, organised, and committed to making a positive difference in learners’ lives.

Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • Strong communication skills – able to build trust with learners, parents/carers, and colleagues.
  • Empathy and patience – understanding the barriers young people may face, including mental health needs, learning difficulties, or social challenges.
  • Confidence and assertiveness – able to challenge poor attendance appropriately while remaining supportive and professional.
  • Experience working with young people (education, youth work, support work, or similar roles).
  • Good understanding of safeguarding and the ability to follow procedures confidently.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, demanding environment while staying organised and focused.
  • Problem‑solving skills – able to identify attendance issues and implement appropriate strategies.
  • A non‑judgemental attitude and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Willingness to conduct home visits when necessary to support attendance and welfare checks.
  • Teamwork skills – able to work closely with the Delivery Manager and wider staff.
Desirable Attributes
  • Knowledge of EHCPs and supporting learners with additional needs.
  • Experience monitoring attendance or working within an educational setting.
  • Ability to motivate disengaged learners and encourage positive routines.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people achieve their goals.
