Job Purpose

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) is currently recruiting permanent Electricians to work within HMP Edinburgh.

The Electrician will support the Estates Management team in all aspects of Estates work, providing a comprehensive repairs and maintenance service for SP&N and TP&N distribution systems, including work to small power, inspection and testing, work to final circuits and lighting.

All of our Electrician roles are based on 35 hours per week worked across Monday to Friday and we provide all tools and PPE.

There will be a requirement to periodically work on call hours, and you may need to travel to other establishments and areas. For this reason, a full driving licence that enables the person to drive in the UK is preferred. SPS is willing to consider proposals put forward by applicants to carry out the duties by any other means.

Current Annual Pay Package of up to £39,569 + On Call Allowance*

Where there are more successful candidate(s) than posts available, locational reserve merit order lists may be created and retained for 12 months.

Successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment checks, which will include an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check, References, DVLA licence check (where applicable) and Nationality checks as well as a Medical Assessment.

Applicant requirements
Applicants must have served a recognised apprenticeship and have obtained a qualification in an electrical discipline to a minimum of SVQ Level 3 or equivalent and should also hold a current electrical qualification in electrical installations, for example City and Guilds 2382 or BS7671 (18th Edition).

*Please note the annual pay package is dependent on qualifications, skills and experience, and is made up of basic salary plus temporary allowances – please see attached pay & benefits statement for further details.

*Geographical Recruitment Retention Allowance of £3,000 is included in the advertised maximum salary, granted until December 2025 and will be reviewed at that point.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out reactive and planned maintenance and minor works throughout the establishment as instructed to all electrical plant, equipment and systems.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment through regular checking and testing of electrical appliances and installations in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Participate in an on-call rota for emergency repairs; attend home establishment within 60 minutes of being called out and provide area coverage when required.
  • Monitor and adjust electrical control systems to ensure optimum performance within guidelines; perform electrical inspection and testing.
  • Provide technical support and advice on electrical and electronic issues to the Technical Manager and other staff as necessary.
  • Assume practical responsibility for all electrical installations, and provide timely pre-emptive condition reports to the Technical Manager.

Qualification Requirements
  • Applicant should have served a recognised apprenticeship in an electrical discipline to SVQ level 3.
  • Evidence through formal certification is preferred, but alternatives such as JIB graded, ECS card holder, or CSCS gold card holder may be considered.
  • Must have a qualification in electrical installations, e.g., City and Guilds 2382 or BS7671 18th Edition (17th Edition accepted if willing to undertake the 18th Edition).

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Requirements
  • Experience in installation, repair, maintenance, test and inspection of electrical systems in an industrial/commercial environment, including SP&N, TP&N distribution and understanding of electronic systems maintenance and repairs.
  • Awareness of basic maintenance and repair tasks (mechanical and building works) or willingness to develop these skills.
  • Sound knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation, Risk Assessments and Method Statements (Safe Systems of Work).
  • Ability to interpret drawings, instructions, and specifications.
