Control Systems Engineer – Warnham site, Horsham
Come and join us as an Electrical Control Systems Engineer at our Warnham site in Horsham! Your day‑to‑day responsibilities will cover maintaining and repairing production plant and machinery, troubleshooting robotics, and continuously improving production processes.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and repair production plant and machinery, including providing technical support to factories, problem solving with robotics, general fault finding, and suggesting improvements to production.
- Apply extensive knowledge in servo control and servo drives, burner control systems and gas work, guard switches and interlock systems assessment, and pneumatic circuit design.
- Read and work from AutoCAD drawings; design new electrical drawings and upgrade or convert PLC programmes.
- Program PLCs (Siemens S5, S7), SCADA, HMI; work with communication protocols (RS232/485, Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Modbus, Profibus, FieldBus) and program in C++ and Visual Basic.
- Install new equipment, including commissioning control panels.
- Promote and implement Engineering Technical Specifications and Standards Procedures to ensure compliance with the Machinery Directive.
- Provide management and assessment of functional safety, supporting planning and design of safety circuits and safety logic programming.
- Manage mandatory electrical installation testing, including fixed wire testing, PAT testing, HV transformers, and switchgears.
- Survey and control electrical drawings and PLC/SCADA backups.
- Ensure installation and operation of any machine or sub‑assembly complies with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
- Ensure compliance with the European Machinery Directive (including CE marking) for new equipment or significant changes.
- Investigate new technology to upgrade existing equipment for improved factory performance.
- Collaborate with UK Engineering and Central Engineering to maximise team and machinery potential.
- Promote continuous improvement (PIP project) and lean manufacturing methodologies.
- Implement and embrace the 5S and visual management techniques.
Qualifications
- HND in engineering, preferably mechatronics.
- C&G 18th edition qualification; comfortable modifying and working on 440 V control systems.
- Understanding of inverter drive systems (Siemens, Danfoss, SEW).
- Experience with control systems for temperature, pressure and analogue systems.
- Good knowledge of electrical safety circuits.
- Electrical schematics design from scratch.
- Safety systems design.
- PLC programming and hardware, preferably Siemens S7.
- Robot programming experience.
- Experience in electrical and control design and development.
- Ability to produce CAD electrical schematics using AutoCAD.
- Work experience in a heavy industrial environment.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing technology.
- Team‑work and independent working capability.
- Willingness to contribute ideas and share information.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills; experience communicating with stakeholders at all levels.
Desirable skills
- Experience with brick and/or roof tile manufacturing machinery.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- IOSH or NEBOSH certification.
- Continuous Improvement (CI) system experience.
- Knowledge of CMMS systems.
- MEWP licence.
- FLT licence.
