Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X–rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting edge technology.

Now is an exciting time to join Diamond as we are currently undertaking a major upgrade project called Diamond–II, which will combine new accelerators with new and upgraded beamlines. This will continue to build on Diamond's world class position, and enable us to continue to deliver brilliant science, tackling some of the most challenging scientific questions of the 21st century.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for an Electrical Design Engineer to join our Engineering team to provide electrical engineering design support to the technical systems of the Diamond facility.

The Engineering team plays a key role in the design, development and construction of the equipment required to enable X ray production for scientific research.

Responsibilities
  • Assisting and producing electrical designs for a variety of projects including Motor Controls, Vacuum control systems, Electrical rack and panel design, Low Voltage distribution systems & Relay and Interlock logic.
  • Developing CAD schematics, hook ups, and other electrical design documentation.
  • Assisting in and carrying out procurement of equipment through commercial suppliers.
  • Maintaining and updating engineering drawings and documentation on projects.
  • Design in line with the British, European International and company standards.
  • Liaising with system owners to gain experience in technologies such as programmable logic controllers, motion controls, distributed I/O, instrumentation, and pneumatic controls.
  • Contributing to hazard analysis and risk assessment exercises.
About You

You will have a background in an Electrical Engineering discipline, with at least a Level 3 Qualification and recognised Apprenticeship, or HNC or above in a relevant discipline.

You will be passionate about a career in electrical engineering with some experience of design, manufacture, assembly, testing and commissioning of Electrical systems. You will also demonstrate basic understanding of control systems and electrical designs methodology, with working knowledge of a CAD system.

  • Producing working designs e.g. electrical diagrams, parts lists, and general assembly drawings.

  • Motor control systems driving Stepper, Servo or DC motors.
