Overview
EL/PL Fee Earner – Birmingham
Role Purpose
To manage and assist with a varied caseload of Employers' Liability (EL) and Public Liability (PL) claims on behalf of defendant clients, including insurers, corporate bodies, and public sector organisations. The role involves handling cases from pre-action through to trial, drafting legal documents, liaising with all parties, and achieving client service, financial, and quality objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a personal caseload of EL/PL claims (pre-litigation and litigated) under supervision where required.
- Investigate liability by obtaining records, taking witness statements, and liaising with experts.
- Draft legal documents including pleadings, witness statements, reports, and instructions to counsel/experts.
- Progress cases through procedural stages, including Pre-Action Disclosure, Stage 3 Hearings, Infant Approvals, and court directions.
- Prepare for and attend court hearings and client meetings.
- Provide prompt responses to clients, claimants, insurers, and other stakeholders.
- Maintain compliance with deadlines, service level agreements (SLAs), and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Meet financial targets including chargeable hours and billing.
- Contribute to team development, client updates, and knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
- Essential Experience handling or assisting with EL/PL claims, or a strong understanding of negligence and duty of care.
- Knowledge of Civil Procedure Rules and the litigation process.
- Strong drafting and analytical skills.
- Good organisational ability and case management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently (with supervision as needed) and collaboratively in a team.
- Comfortable working to deadlines and achieving financial targets.
Desirable
- Experience of both fast-track and multi-track EL/PL claims.
- Familiarity with fraudulent claims, highways, or property damage cases.
- Previous defendant insurance or public sector litigation experience.
- Advocacy experience (solicitor level).
- Knowledge of occupational disease or stress claims.
