Salary: £19,459.91 - £19,768.74 (actual salary) £25,583 - £25,989 (full-time equivalent)

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Design Technology Technician to support the delivery of Design and Technology subjects across multiple specialist areas, including product design, graphics, food technology, textiles and related disciplines. This role plays a key part in ensuring that learning environments are safe, well‑organised and fully resourced, enabling teaching staff to deliver engaging and effective practical lessons. The successful candidate will work closely with staff and students, contributing to the smooth operation of workshops, preparation areas and specialist facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare, organise and clear practical materials and equipment for Design Technology and Food Technology lessons.
  • Maintain workshops, preparation rooms and storage areas to a high standard of cleanliness and organisation.
  • Ensure tools, machinery and equipment are safe, functional and ready for use at all times.
  • Monitor stock levels of materials, consumables and spare parts, arranging replenishment when required.
  • Safely store equipment, materials and chemicals in line with relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Carry out routine checks, basic maintenance and minor repairs to equipment and machinery.
  • Assist teaching staff with the development and costing of practical projects.
  • Support the setup of Food Technology lessons, including ingredient preparation and delivery management.
  • Operate a range of specialist equipment such as cutters, drills, saws, laser cutters and ICT‑based machinery.
  • Maintain accurate records including inventories, risk assessments, COSHH documentation and PAT testing logs.
  • Support health and safety compliance and ensure new regulations are implemented in practical settings.
  • Assist with sourcing new equipment and liaising with external suppliers or trades where required.
  • Accompany students on educational visits when necessary.
  • Work flexibly to meet deadlines linked to lessons, assessments and maintenance schedules.
Requirements
  • Practical experience working with materials such as wood, metal, plastics or food in a workshop or similar environment.
  • Knowledge of Design Technology equipment and relevant software.
  • Ability to follow complex instructions and work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Confidence in working with students and adults from a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Awareness of equality, inclusion and safe working practices.
  • Knowledge across at least two Design Technology disciplines to support Food Technology delivery is desirable.
