International Women’s Initiative (IWI) is an organisation which raises awareness of the threats to the human rights of women across the globe and to promote and assist in the achievement of gender equality. Since 2012, IWI has worked to eradicate and educate on human rights violations against women. The Director of Membership will lead IWI’s member relations efforts, including strategizing, planning for, and implementing activities and services that provide value to members and promote membership retention and growth. You will lead IWI’s efforts to understand, articulate, and respond to the needs of IWI while enhancing IWI’s earned revenues through membership development and sponsorships. This individual will work closely with the Executive Director to plan for and carry out resource development activities that increase IWI’s ability to effectively and sustainably carry out its mission. The Director of Membership will be a member of IWI’s senior management.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of developing, strengthening, and maintaining IWI’s corporate and individual membership network, including developing long and short term membership development benchmarks and budgets; collaborating with marketing strategically, including direct mail campaigns; use of social media and website content; leading IWI’s member relations efforts; and ensuring, administering, interpreting, and responding to programme evaluation and development.
  • Ensure a culture of service to members is preserved and promoted throughout IWI, that membership activities are fully integrated into all aspects of IWI’s work, and that IWI’s strategic plan, services, and programmes reflect IWI’s commitment to understanding and increasing member value.
  • Respond to enquiries from current and prospective members and track results.
  • Plan and manage membership events in coordination with other staff, including special workshops, networking events, IWI’s Annual Conference, and other trainings.
  • Ensure IWI’s membership database functions optimally for the organisation; recommend strategies and solutions to staff for using the database to achieve programmatic goals; provide staff training as needed; plan for and implement records management, data collection, technology, and reporting that supports IWI’s membership goals.
Business Products for Members
  • Develop, negotiate, implement, maintain, and evaluate the IWI’s member benefits.
  • Develop and carry out promotional and marketing activities related to member benefits and services.
  • Negotiate and monitor contracts with vendors and business members while maximising the value for members, managing compliance with contract terms, and monitoring the earned revenues from business products.
  • Act as a liaison between IWI and members by maintaining relationships and solving problems.
  • Respond to member and other enquiries and provide technical assistance where appropriate.
Resource Development
  • Conduct prospect research, and target and solicit corporations and businesses for membership, donations, and event sponsorships.
  • Manage all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to plan and carry out additional resource development activities.
General
  • Maintain relations with associations, professional membership organisations, and appropriate nonprofit networks to inform of the development and management of IWI’s membership and business programmes.
  • Manage the activities of staff, volunteers, and contractors working in areas of membership and oversee the administrative systems that support these areas.
  • As needed, lead efforts on other short term IWI projects.
Qualifications
  • Exceptional people skills and high level of proficiency in written and oral communication skills including listening and speaking 1:1 or with small and large audiences.
  • Strong customer service orientation and satisfaction in providing assistance.
  • Genuine enjoyment in meeting others and learning about the successes and challenges they experience in their nonprofit endeavours.
  • Strong project planning, critical thinking, and problem solving; self‑motivated and self‑directed with entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Able to successfully manage interruptions and details.
  • Minimum 5 years working in the nonprofit sector, preferably in senior management.
  • Experienced in the use of computer‑based constituent relationship management system for membership tracking.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in fundraising/sales, including corporate sponsorships.
  • Enjoy working in a fast paced and dynamic team environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Time Commitment

The minimum commitment is an average of 10 hours per week including a weekly one on one meeting with supervisor.
