Diesel Locomotive Production Support Engineer

Location: Crewe with travel to the Leeds depot once per week

Salary: £50,000 to £56,000

Job type: Permanent, full time

A leading UK-based rail freight and logistics operator is seeking a Diesel Locomotive Production Support Engineer to join their dynamic engineering team. This company operates across major ports and inland terminals throughout the UK and Europe, with a strong reputation in both Intermodal and Heavy Haul freight services.

You’ll be responsible for providing technical support across a diverse diesel locomotive fleet. Reporting directly to the Fleet Engineer, you will play a key role in reviewing and improving technical performance and maintenance policies to enhance fleet reliability and safety.

The key responsibilities for this Diesel Locomotive Production Support Engineer role are:
  • Act as a safety leader, ensuring all work is performed to the highest standards and risks are properly managed.
  • Monitor reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness of the locomotive fleets, ensuring that performance trends are identified early.
  • Identify technical improvements and develop solutions whilst ensuring accordance with the engineering change process.
  • Collaborate with the Fleet Engineer and Fleet Manager to create an Asset Management Plan covering safety, availability, and lifecycle cost, to minimise the cost of ownership plan for the locomotive fleet.
  • Review and develop maintenance specifications and practices in line with rail industry standards.
  • Develop and deliver fleet modifications to improve fleet performance, including the required technical and financial approval.
  • Review fleet performance providing reports that meet the requirements of the Return of Service Experience process.
  • Identify deficiencies and develop recommendations for corrective actions in maintenance practices, materials or design.
  • Lead technical projects focused on boosting reliability and reducing maintenance costs.
  • Participate in an on-call rota, offering technical support during mainline incidents and attending sites as needed.
Experience required for this Diesel Locomotive Production Support Engineer role are:
  • Solid engineering experience within Traction & Rolling Stock.
  • A strong understanding of rail terminal operations.
  • Minimum of an HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer status is desirable.
