Job summary

A leading healthcare provider is looking for a trainee Diabetic Eye Screener to join their team in Kemp Town Estate. This role involves conducting visual examinations, managing clinic operations, and educating patients about diabetic eye screening. The ideal candidate should have strong communication skills, a UK driving licence, and a willingness to undertake further training for the Level 3 Health Screeners Diploma. Shift work, including evenings and travel to various locations, is a key component of this position.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a full UK driving licence and access to own transport.
  • Experience with patient education and managing clinical observations.
  • Willingness for ongoing CPD through training and conferences.

  • Administer eye drops and educate patients on their effects.
  • Accurately record clinical observations in the OptoMize system.
  • Manage clinic timing and patient flow, including evening and weekend clinics.
  • Assist in service development projects and data collection.

Job description
Overview

The trainee Diabetic Eye Screener will work as part of the Sussex NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, developing clinical and technical skills towards the Level 3 Health Screeners Diploma.

Responsibilities
  • Perform visual acuity, dilated pupil examinations and fundus photography using a colour fundus camera and OCT imaging.
  • Administer eye drops, and provide patient education on potential effects of dilating drops.
  • Record clinical observations accurately in the OptoMize electronic record system.
  • Manage clinic timing and patient flow, including some evening and weekend clinics.
  • Assist in service development projects, data collection and analysis, and process improvement activities.
  • Support the team by managing rosters and contributing to workforce planning.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, the Screening Team Leader and other staff members.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Basic knowledge of diabetic eye screening procedures.
  • Strong communication skills, empathy and the ability to handle challenging situations.
  • Full UK driving licence and access to own transport for daily travel to multiple clinics.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team; concentration for long periods in a darkened room.
  • Willingness to undertake Level 3 Health Screeners Diploma training and CPD.
Training & Development

Qualified or training into the Level 3 Health Screeners Diploma; ongoing CPD through internal and external training, conferences and the Trust’s appraisal process.

Working Hours & Travel

Shift work, including evenings and weekends. Daily travel to various locations throughout West and East Sussex; access to own car and full UK driver licence required.
