About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for a Design Team Leader to join their Power T&D business in Scotland.

Role purpose:

Providing technical oversight, strategy and direction to the geotechnical design and foundation design works undertaken and managed by the Geotechnical and OHL foundation design team on all projects in BB Power Transmission and Distribution.

A firm understanding of the geotechnical and structural foundation principles, construction techniques, modelling and analysis tools, applicable standards, and value engineering are core to this role.

To work with project team, designers and subcontractors throughout the design phase of all projects and deliver a safe and suitable scope of works in line with the project objectives.

Take responsibility for the design delivery and design suitability for works across Power T&D construction projects with particular focus on Overhead Line (OHL) foundations and geotechnical delivery.

Lead and manage the geotechnical and OHL foundations team, working together with the Design Delivery Lead to review team capacity and resource the team to deliver projects efficiently.

What you'll be doing
Key Accountabilities:
  • To oversee the design and co-ordination of geotechnical information, assessments and designs required on the Skye project
  • Support the DDL, EM and Resource Managers to produce resource profiles to assist with better resource forecast and team capacity to deliver projects efficiently.
  • Ensure the timely delivery and quality of geotechnical and foundation design, by both internal BB and supply chain partners.
  • Understand and be able to capture Client requirements, including those not explicitly stated within the contract.
  • Able to contribute to the generation of value engineered solutions and design delivery solutions.
  • To arrange training and look to upskill the team to continue to deliver projects to programme.
  • Responsible for the safety, commercial and performance of the team. This includes reporting on KPIs across this areas.
Key Responsibilities:
  • To assess and identify design and temporary works requirements on each project. Including:
  • Drive a Safety by Design approach at all times.
  • Lead ground risk assessments, tower capacity assessment, site design and enablement, slope stability assessments and specification / management of geotechnical works
  • Lead the discussion with client and supplier technical teams to establish and maintain sound geotechnical practice and principles across the project scope.
  • Adjusting to site conditions and enabling ongoing construction works to be performed with least impact.
  • Maintain compliance of CDM regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of designs output by the team
  • Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval as required / permitted by the Chief Engineer.
  • Work closely with other elements of the design team to ensure effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Support colleagues in managing the output and delivery of suitable design drawings.
Who we're looking for
Skills Required:
  • Degree level education or equivalent with formal training in civil engineering and/or geotechnical engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer preferred with either the ICE or IStructE
  • Strong, proven post-graduate experience in the civil engineering industry
  • Experience of the supervision of sub-consultants or subcontractors
  • Proven experience of the design of civil engineering works
  • Strong, proven experience of the management of design of civil or geotechnical engineering works
  • IT Literate (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, CAD)
  • Working knowledge of BIM360Docs and Autodesk Software
  • Extensive experience of geotechnical design including numerical analysis and finite element modelling
  • Expertise in the use of Tekla Tedds, Infraworks, LimitState Geo, Slide 7.0 etc.
