Job summary

A leading recruitment agency is seeking an experienced Database Administrator to support a major public sector client. The role involves designing and evolving database schemas, monitoring and resolving performance issues, and managing database security and availability. Candidates must have over 5 years of experience with MySQL or MariaDB, along with strong knowledge of AWS data services and database performance management. This position offers the opportunity to work within an engineering-led environment.

Qualifications

Job description

An experienced Database Administrator is required to support a major public sector client on a business‑critical programme. The role sits within an engineering‑led environment and works closely with technical teams and stakeholders to ensure database platforms are secure, performant and resilient.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and evolve database schemas in collaboration with engineering teams
  • Monitor, diagnose and resolve database and query performance issues
  • Review and optimise operational SQL, including use of stored procedures
  • Manage database availability, security, backup, recovery and disaster recovery
  • Perform upgrades, migrations, patching and ongoing maintenance
  • Support releases and deployments involving database changes
  • Set and uphold database administration standards, capacity planning and best practice
Required Experience
  • 5+ years' experience with MySQL or MariaDB, specifically InnoDB
  • Strong working knowledge of AWS data services (Aurora, RDS, DynamoDB)
  • 5+ years' experience in database performance management and tuning (schemas, indexes, SQL)
  • Proven experience creating and reviewing SQL within an SCM‑backed CI/CD lifecycle
  • Strong background in schema design and lifecycle management (tables, indexes, constraints)
  • Hands‑on experience developing Stored Procedures and Functions
  • Experience working collaboratively with wider engineering teams to design and improve new or existing services
