For this role we are considering applications in the region of £50,000 – £52,000 (dependent on experience) with a very competitive bonus, paid quarterly.

This is a hybrid role which requires 3 days a week in the office during probationary period, and will decrease to 2 days upon successful completion.

What you’ll be doing...
  • Own and maintain Verdantix's production relational database environments (PostgreSQL and related services).
  • Design, evolve, and optimise database schemas to support new datasets, product features, and analytical use cases.
  • Build and maintain robust ETL / ELT pipelines for structured data from internal research systems and third‑party sources.
  • Implement data validation, integrity checks, and performance tuning to ensure high data quality and availability.
  • Develop and maintain backend APIs that expose curated datasets to client‑facing data products and internal tools.
  • Support data modelling for downstream BI, analytics, and visualisation layers.
  • Implement and maintain CI / CD pipelines for backend services and data workflows.
  • Monitor cloud infrastructure health, system performance, uptime, and cost efficiency.
  • Support infrastructure‑as‑code practices using tools such as Terraform or equivalent.
  • Assist with containerised deployments (Docker‑based services) where applicable.
  • Implement logging, alerting, and observability solutions across data and backend services.
  • Contribute to platform security, access control, and disaster‑recovery practices alongside senior engineers.
  • Support AI / ML engineers with clean, well‑structured, and performant structured data feeds.
  • Collaborate with frontend engineers to ensure optimal API performance and user experience.
What we're looking for...
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years' professional experience as a Data Engineer, Backend Engineer, or Hybrid Data / Platform Engineer.
  • Strong hands‑on experience with PostgreSQL (or equivalent relational databases), SQL (complex query design and optimisation) and Python for data pipelines and backend services.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and maintaining production ETL pipelines.
  • Experience operating cloud‑based environments (AWS or Azure, ideally Azure).
  • Exposure to CI / CD pipelines and automated deployment workflows.
  • Solid understanding of API development and integration with frontend applications.
  • Practical experience with monitoring, logging, and system observability.
  • Infrastructure‑as‑Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.

  • Methodical problem‑solver who enjoys diagnosing performance and stability issues.
  • Able to communicate clearly with product managers, analysts, and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Curious and motivated to continuously improve platform architecture and engineering standards.
  • Collaborative, no‑ego attitude that is excited to work in a fast‑growing technology organisation.
