Customs Clerk - Burntwood - Up to £30,000

Our client, who are based in Burntwood are looking for a Customs Clerk to join their team. As Customs Clerk, you will be tasked to process customs clearances for air, sea, and road shipments-both import and export. Ensure accurate documentation, timely updates, and smooth movement of goods.

Job type: Permanent

Hours: Monday to Friday - 08:30 - 17:30

Salary: Up to £30,000

Main Duties
  • Manage customs clearances for a range of customers across all transport modes.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients.
  • Provide excellent customer service to encourage repeat business.
  • Monitor and manage a shared inbox, ensuring enquiries are handled efficiently.
  • Check and verify customer documentation; resolve any errors or missing information.
  • Complete customs declarations accurately using internal transport and customs systems.
  • Escalate issues when required.
  • Support key account management and contribute to client growth.
Key Responsibilities
  • Calculate and process duties, taxes, and customs clearances.
  • Issue correct documentation to ensure shipments are cleared quickly and correctly.
  • Liaise with internal teams, suppliers, customs brokers, and customers to coordinate clearances.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of customs laws, procedures, and restrictions, advising customers when needed.
  • Communicate with all relevant parties (customers, freight forwarders, importers/exporters, government agencies).
  • Keep stakeholders updated on declaration progress, VAT/duty payments, and any issues that may delay shipments.
  • Work efficiently under pressure and within deadlines, using your initiative and maintaining a flexible approach.
Skills & Experience
  • Solid customs knowledge (imports, exports, declarations, procedures).
  • Familiarity with systems such as NCTS, CDS, and Destin8 is beneficial.
  • Understanding of UK/EU customs requirements and documentation.
  • Good awareness of freight industry operations and incoterms.
  • Additional language skills are helpful but not essential.
