Court Usher - Old Bailey (Temporary)

Employer: HMCTS via Brook Street

Location: Old Bailey, Central London (on-site, 5 days per week)

Salary: £13.78 per hour

Contract: Full-time, Temporary till 31/05/26 with a view to extend

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm (37 hours per week)

About the Role

Brook Street is recruiting a Court Usher to support court operations at the Old Bailey. This role is central to the smooth and professional running of court hearings and offers valuable experience within the public sector.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Courtroom preparation and management: Open, close, and prepare courtrooms to ensure hearings run smoothly and on time.
  • Court user support: Escort and assist witnesses, jurors, legal professionals, and members of the public throughout their court visit.
  • Case and hearing coordination: Call cases, announce parties, and support the orderly flow of hearings.
  • Court records and attendance: Record hearing times, complete court records, and track attendance of parties.
  • Witness and jury support: Swear in witnesses, administer oaths, and support jury deliberations when required.
  • Remote hearing support: Assist with hearings conducted via live streaming and the Court Video Platform (CVP).
  • Enquiries and communication: Respond to enquiries from court users and the public in a calm and professional manner.
  • File and document handling: Manage court files, including distribution, copying, and secure disposal of documents.
  • Administrative support: Provide general administrative and operational support in line with HMCTS procedures.
Experience & Skills Required
  • Experience in a customer-facing or public-facing role, dealing directly with members of the public.
  • Professional, polite, and confident communicator.
  • Calm, tactful, and sensitive in challenging or emotional situations.
  • Well organised with good attention to detail.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office.
