Consultant Radiographer - Mammography

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of a dynamic and high performing team, delivering the highest quality care to both symptomatic and breast screening patients. The Newcastle Breast Screening Unit serves a total screening population of around 140,000 clients and provides a high quality symptomatic service as part of a multi-disciplinary team. A full range of diagnostic and treatment techniques are carried out including contrast enhanced mammography, ultrasound and stereotactic biopsies and MRI breast biopsy.

As a Consultant Breast Radiographer, you will work alongside Consultant Radiologists and other experienced Consultant Radiographers to deliver expert clinical care in a range of clinics including breast assessment clinic and onestop breast clinic. You must have an MSc in Breast Imaging and be able to work autonomously, utilising advanced practice skills in breast ultrasound, image interpretation and interventional procedures.

The role requires an experienced, highly skilled Consultant Radiographer who works well in a team but is also able to work autonomously effectively under pressure in a busy clinic environment. You will have a patient-centered approach and a passion for delivering the highest possible quality of care as part of a high performing multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

You will work in a busy clinic environment, working alongside Radiologists and other Consultant Radiographers to provide a high quality symptomatic and screening service.

Significant autonomous practice post qualification in the three advanced practice disciplines in breast of ultrasound, image interpretation and interventional procedures, is required. You will use expert clinical judgement to make decisions based on interpretation of multiple imaging modalities including mammography, ultrasound and contrast enhanced mammography. A key element of the role is to undertake assessment of clients recalled under the NHS Breast Screening Programme according to national guidance and quality standards. You will also provide highly specialist advice regarding patient diagnosis, care and treatment relating to breast imaging to colleagues within the breast unit and across professional boundaries. You will have the skills, knowledge and experience to provide a consultant radiographer service that is interchangeable with a Consultant Radiologist to ensure seamless service delivery, as appropriate.

As well as the clinical aspect of the role, you will work closely with the operational management team to shape and implement service delivery, promoting best practice and auditing current practice. You will also provide education and training to other professionals, multidisciplinary groups, patients and carers.

Job responsibilities
  • To act as an autonomous practitioner working alongside Consultant Radiologists to lead on the clinical development of mammography practice.
  • To provide expert clinical knowledge in the field of breast imaging for the benefit of patients.
  • Work independently and unsupervised as an expert practitioner in performing diagnostic breast procedures.

To function at a higher level of practice demonstrating higher levels of decision making, planning and collaborative working.
  • To analyse complex information from multiple sources and translate findings into recommendations, policy decisions and actions.
  • To lead quality initiatives to continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework to ensure the highest quality of care is provide in the safest manner.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
  • HCPC registered BSc Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent with relevant post-graduation experience
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Mammography practice
  • MSc in breast imaging and post graduate certificates in all areas of breast imaging with specialist knowledge at consultant level
  • Significant experience working as an advanced practitioner in breast imaging
  • Research qualification at least to an MSc level with relevant research experience
Knowledge & Experience
  • Evidence of significant autonomous practice post qualification of 3 advanced practice disciplines in breast and working alongside Breast Radiologists to cement and develop advanced levels of knowledge
  • Must have expert knowledge of all breast diagnostic techniques and related anatomy and pathology. Along with local protocols for the surgical and oncological management of breast cancer
  • Relevant experience in teaching and education
  • Working knowledge of all relevant professional and NHS policies and procedures
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD
  • Involvement in regional and national professional committees
Skills & Abilities
  • Able to use expert clinical judgement to make decisions based on interpretation of multiple imaging modalities that may be conflicting and require expert analysis to recommend next steps in patient care/diagnosis
  • Ability to perform all required advanced clinical techniques and be able to do this whilst being the only person in the unit to have these skills when breast Radiologists are unavailable
  • IT skills for Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS)
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time when film reading
  • Very high levels of dexterity and precision when taking core biopsies of lesions that are just mm in size
  • Evidence of leadership skills
