Job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non‑clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.

The shift pattern for this post is Monday‑Friday: 9am‑5pm, plus on call rota.

We are seeking enthusiastic candidates for this Inverclyde Consultant post in Old Age Psychiatry (10 PAs) to deliver comprehensive psychiatric care for patients over 65 registered at GP practices in Greenock, Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm, covering the Eastern Inverclyde HSCP (population ~8,500). This full‑time post includes both outpatient and inpatient responsibilities, with clinical leadership expected across multidisciplinary teams in the community and hospital settings.

Inpatient care is provided at Ward 4, Larkfield Unit, Inverclyde Royal Hospital. The service benefits from an integrated Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) with embedded social workers, Mental Health Officers and allied health professionals. The Old Age Psychiatry team collaborates closely with other local and regional psychiatrists and participates in regular case discussions and senior clinician and management meetings.

The post holder will be expected to have recognition of trainer status. Resident doctors are frequently appointed to OPMH Inverclyde.

Opportunity for higher trainer status with support if desired.

The post holder will be expected to be involved with teaching medical students from Glasgow University.

Applicants must hold full GMC registration, a licence to practice and be eligible for the Specialist Register (CCT or CESR). Experience or eligibility to act as RMO and AMP under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 is required. The post is offered on a 10 PA basis (8 DCC, 2 non‑DCC), with flexible and less‑than‑full‑time options considered. On‑call commitment is 1 in 25 (non‑resident) as part of a wider regional rota.

Facilities include the Larkfield Unit (acute and functional/organic wards), Argyll Unit (memory clinic, outpatient and therapy services) and Orchard View (HBCCC). The post is fully supported by a multidisciplinary team, including nursing, psychology, OT, physiotherapy and administrative staff. Clinics are primarily based at the Larkfield Unit, with strong links to the integrated community team at Crown House, Greenock.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a well‑established, forward‑thinking Old Age Psychiatry service committed to high‑quality, integrated care for older adults in Inverclyde.
