Overview
The post holder will provide expert clinical leadership within the maternity service and designated areas by providing professional leadership and support for midwifery staff. The focus of this role is to provide exemplary, experienced leadership and support for midwives in clinical practice within and across intrapartum areas. The post holder will support, advocate and challenge intrapartum practice calmly and sensitively. It is envisaged that at least 50% of this role will be spent working in the clinical area, including the intrapartum settings.
The post holder will lead programs of care for women and families requiring advanced clinical assessment, working with midwifery and obstetric colleagues to develop personalised care plans meeting individual needs, including provision of clinical support and guidance flexibility to meet service and family needs. The post holder will play a pivotal role in leading and evaluating the training strategy across intrapartum areas, ensuring education and development for the maternity workforce. The Consultant Midwife for Intrapartum care will provide a consultancy service for midwifery internally and externally and act as an ambassador for the Trust\'s maternity service, representing it as a centre of excellence.
Main duties are structured around four principal functions of advanced practice: Expert Midwifery Practice and Service Development; Professional Leadership and Consultancy Function; Education and Training Function; and Research, Audit and Evaluation Function.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert professional leadership and communicate complex information sensitively across all staff and patient groups.
- Participate in clinical aspects of maternity care and monitor standards of care with feedback from women and families.
- Act as a midwifery advocate and provide consultancy for families seeking care outside clinical guidance.
- Act as an ambassador for midwifery practice and a positive role model for the service.
- Demonstrate expert knowledge of contemporary clinical practice and lead service developments and pathways to enhance quality and safety across the maternity continuum.
- Lead, develop and evaluate the research strategy within the maternity division and work with regional and national research networks.
- Develop, lead and evaluate specialist pathways for care for women and families requiring complex decision making; collaborate with multi-professional teams and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate intrapartum episodes, ensuring high standards of written and verbal education for women, relatives and affiliated disciplines.
- Drive local, regional and national training development for Labour Ward Coordinators and promote patient and family involvement in treatment decisions.
- Lead the Fetal Monitoring Team to maintain teaching and assessment programmes and collaborate with PROMPT leads to maximise training and evaluation of outcomes.
Education and Training
- Provide internal and external teaching across disciplines to promote the midwifery agenda and interprofessional collaboration.
- Coordinate, teach and empower midwives to develop clinical skills and competencies; ensure education programmes are evaluated for safety and quality of care.
- Identify learning needs across the organisation and support professional development opportunities.
Qualifications and Training
Essential
- RM qualification with current live PIN on NMC Register
- Master’s Degree or in progress
- Health-related diploma/degree
- Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Course
- Mentor preparation

- PMA
- PhD/Doctoral studies or ongoing
Experience
Essential
- Minimum 5 years post-registration experience; at least 2 years at Band 8A or equivalent in acute intrapartum setting
- Extensive leadership and managerial experience at a senior level
- Experience as a substantive Labour Ward Co-ordinator
- Broad clinical midwifery experience with evidence of innovative practice involving research or audit
