Job summary

This is a full-time substantive post (less than full-time would be considered for the right candidate) for a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. The postholder will be instrumental in delivering a high-quality clinical service in collaboration with regional Integrated Care Board members and will participate in developing the Respiratory service at Walsall NHS Trust. The successful applicant will contribute to the care of respiratory and General Internal Medicine (GIM) on-call rota, with a track record of excellent clinical service delivery, service improvement, teaching, training, and other qualities as identified in the person specification. Annual job planning and annual appraisal are required as part of the re-validation cycle.

The role is for 10 Programmed Activities per week with an additional PA available by negotiation to cover a Saturday morning ward on a 1:8 rota. Participation in the General medical on-call rota currently frequency 1:18, incurring an additional PA. Total PAs for this role is 11.5. Part-time candidates will be welcomed. The Trust and Respiratory Medicine department offer mentoring for the new Consultant appointment.

Main duties

Duties will include bronchoscopy sessions, general respiratory ward rounds, and supervision/teaching of junior medical staff. The ideal candidate should be skilled in Endoscopic Bronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) or willing to undertake training. The post is in line with the described program of 10 PAs per week with potential additional PAs as stated above.

Part-time applicants will be considered, and a flexible job plan will be arranged. The department provides mentoring for new Consultants.

Job responsibilities
  1. To assist the current team and ensure a commitment to high-quality Respiratory and General Internal Medicine services through continual development of practice in light of evidence-base and clinical standards.
  2. To provide advice to colleagues in other specialties on Respiratory care.
  3. To provide a comprehensive outpatient service and strong interventional skills for Bronchoscopy/EBUS sessions; training and accreditation for EBUS can be provided if required.
  4. To provide clinical support and teaching to junior medical staff, medical students, and postgraduate medical education; educational and supervision accreditation within the first year and participation in junior medical doctor supervision.
  5. To participate in local and national quality improvement projects as part of CPD; training support will be provided.

Person Specification

Qualifications
Essential: Basic Medical Degree; Full MRCP (or equivalent); Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT in Respiratory and GIM (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview) OR CCT in GIM with minimum 5 years training in Respiratory Medicine.

Professional Registration
Essential: Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practice.

Training and Clinical Experience
Essential: Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Respiratory (or within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview); broad experience in Respiratory Medicine; ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care; fully registered with GMC and licence to practice; ability to offer expert clinical advice.

Desirable: Experience in Endobronchial Ultrasound; experience in Cancer.

Flexible Working
Essential: Willing to work flexibly to meet Trust objectives.

Professional and Multi-Disciplinary Team Working
