Job description

The appointee, together with Consultant colleagues, will be responsible for the provision of the Elective Hand and Trauma Reconstructive Service. This will include microsurgery for both upper and lower limb reconstruction. The appointee will undertake outpatient clinics for both elective and non-elective patients, trauma and elective operating sessions, ward round duties and take part in an on-call rota for general Plastic Surgery which includes Hands, soft tissue trauma including lower limb, and Burns (specialist Burns Surgeons provide overriding care for all Burns patients but emergency cover may be required when on-call). On call cover also includes Sheffield Children's Hospital (situated adjacent to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital) but there are no elective Children's Hospital duties associated with this post. The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practice. For further information please visit the GMC website and click on the Registration and Licensing link. You will also have a name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or be eligible within 6 months of the date of the interview. If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.

Essential criteria
  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a license to practice.
  • Name on the specialist register for relevant specialty or eligible within 6 months of the interview. For UK-trained applicants, holder of a CCT or within six months of award of CCT by interview date.
  • FRCS (plastic) or equivalent.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD or equivalent.
  • Diploma in Hand Surgery (British or European).
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio.
Clinical Experience Essential criteria
  • One year of training in hand trauma and hand elective post.
  • Ability to work as an independent practitioner in plastic and hand surgery.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience as a Hand Fellow.
Research Essential criteria
  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate.
Teaching and Training Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching student doctors and doctors in training at all levels.
CPD Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.
Management and Administration Essential criteria
  • Evidence of understanding of the systems and structures of NHS Management.
Clinical Governance and Audit Essential criteria
  • Experience in performing clinical audit.
  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project, demonstrating behaviour consistent with PROUD values.
