Job description
Overview

Applications are invited for enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultants in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia to join our existing team at the University Hospitals of Leicester.

Our specialist services Pain Medicine include clinics within sub specialities: Paediatric Chronic Pain, Facial pain, Pelvic pain, combined clinics with Drug de-addiction Specialist, sessions in LOROS for complex cancer pain and a successful Pain Management Programme. The Department of Anaesthesia at Leicester General site provides services within the Obstetric, High Dependency Unit, Elective Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, General Surgery and Urology including major Urology and Gynaecological robotic surgery specialties. The East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC) provides day case and 23hr care for a wide range of surgical specialties. We are seeking consultants with dedication, determination, and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and you will benefit from the support of an experienced and enthusiastic multi-professional team committed to the delivery of brilliant patient care.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients and to share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients.

Responsibilities
  • Promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community.
  • Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff; involved in appraising and assessing juniors.
  • Teaching, research and administrative duties; proactively develop the service.
  • Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Contribute to pain clinics and perform specialised interventional pain management procedures.
  • Support the Pain department in delivering high quality elective and emergency theatre sessions and provide flexibility to support the service.
  • Provide a safe and efficient anaesthetic service for elective theatres at UHL including preoperative assessment and perioperative care, should the candidate express an interest in anaesthetic theatre sessions (Dual trained only).
  • Work flexibly to support workload and cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
  • Participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with other Consultants, the CMG, local GPs and commissioners within local CCGs.
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff in line with local policies; supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty where applicable.
  • Participate in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and CPD; CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and governance meetings is mandatory. Managerial responsibilities including budgetary aspects where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions.
  • Ensure duties are carried out to the highest standard in line with GMC Good Medical Practice and participate in quality initiatives within the area of work.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, undergraduate students, and other clinical staff; supervision responsibilities and guidance on careers where applicable; involvement in continuing medical education and study leave as provided in job plans.
  • Undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate-specific Induction and competency Programmes; maintain CPD to support revalidation; annual appraisal and up-to-date mandatory training as required by the Trust.
