Overview

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry to join our Older Persons' Mental Health Community Team (South Locality) based at St Mary's Community Health Campus, Portsmouth.

This is a chance to be part of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust -- a newly established, forward-thinking organisation bringing together mental health, learning disability, community, and physical health services. You will join a well-resourced, supportive multidisciplinary team covering approximately 19,400 older adults across the locality, with strong links to inpatient services, Hospital at Home, dementia support, and voluntary sector partners. This role offers flexibility, excellent peer support, opportunities for teaching and training, access to CPD, and the chance to help shape the future of older people’s mental health services in Hampshire.

Main duties of the job

As Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry, you will provide senior clinical leadership, supervision, and direct care within the South Locality Community Mental Health Team. This includes managing a varied caseload, leading on complex assessments and treatment plans, and offering timely medical advice to colleagues across the system. You will work collaboratively with community nurses, support workers, social workers, OTs, and psychologists to ensure safe, effective, and person-centred care.

The role involves outpatient clinics, domiciliary visits, MDT meetings, and close liaison with GPs, Virtual Frailty Ward teams, and local voluntary organisations. You will also supervise and support junior medical staff, contribute to teaching programmes, and play an active role in service development, quality improvement, and clinical governance.

On-call commitments are approximately 1:12, category A (low intensity), supported by a tiered rota system. You will be encouraged to pursue your interests in education, leadership, or research, supported by a dedicated mentoring scheme, peer groups, and excellent CPD opportunities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Included on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry or a Higher (ST6 and above) trainee within 3 months of completing their CCT'
  • *Approval under Sec 12(2) of Mental health Act 1983
  • Approved Clinician under the MHA 1983 (as amended 20107) or has requisite credentials to apply for AC status
  • Registered with the GMC as an approved Clinical/ Educational supervisor or willing to complete this training
  • Up-to-date knowledge in Old Age Psychiatry.
  • Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy, and legislation.
  • Wide clinical experience in Old Age Psychiatry with exposure to specialities in training.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working.
  • Experience of community orientated services for people with dementia and severe mental illness.
  • Experience of multi-agency work, especially with user, carer, and voluntary organisations.
  • Experience in General Practice or primary care liaison
