  • Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.

Working for our organisation

The two Emergency Departments act as a single Emergency Service based on the two sites. The Royal Preston site is designated as the Major Trauma Centre for Lancashire and South Cumbria with ED leading the multi-disciplinary trauma team. Successful applicants will join an extensive team of 28 Middle Grade doctors (including ST3-6 trainees), 36 Junior Doctors (F2-ST2 and SCF) and 3 FY1 doctors providing comprehensive clinical support to the departments. We are now taking ED trainees at ST3 level for part of their Paediatric EM rotation. There is a dedicated, highly skilled nursing workforce including a team of Nurse Clinicians, Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Physiotherapists providing extensive cover.

The ED consultant rota is annualised, allowing flexibility and options for work-life balance. SPA activity will be written in the contract for simulation training as well as that required for revalidation. Any further SPA can be negotiated to enhance the candidate's expertise and interests. There are opportunities to be involved with education at undergraduate level and multidisciplinary post-graduate education, as well as research and audit. The consultant body is encouraged to take the lead at Directorate level and we have a good reputation for our governance procedures. For those with children, both hospital sites have a nursery.
