A Vacancy at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

A part‑time (6 PAs) post as Consultant in Cardiology with a specialist interest in Cardiac Imaging is available now based at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The postholder’s duties will be primarily at John Radcliffe Hospital but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust’s locations and at regional centres. As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT) is seeking to appoint a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Cardiac Imaging on a part‑time basis (6 PAs). The individual should have a strong background in clinical cardiology, as well as expertise in at least two imaging modalities.

The job plan is anticipated to contain 6 Programmed Activities per week on average and includes on‑call commitments. The final Job Plan for the post will be agreed with the Clinical Director upon appointment and will be subject to renegotiation at least annually. The Trust expects consultants to spend typically 80% of their time on clinical work, and up to 15% on teaching of clinical students, training of junior doctors, continuing medical education and professional development, and clinical governance activity. Up to 5% of time may be spent on administration or management, though the proportion may vary from time to time by agreement with the Clinical Director.

All consultant cardiologists participate in a consultant‑of‑the‑week rota for general cardiology, currently 4 weeks in 12 months for a full‑time consultant; this is pro‑rated for part‑time consultants. During these weeks the consultant is released from morning fixed commitments to undertake CCU ward rounds and review emergency admissions and inpatients.

OUHFT is a large tertiary cardiac centre serving a population of 2.5 million. This exciting new post is designed to support cardiac imaging, as well as elements of the clinical cardiology service. The applicant should be both enthusiastic and flexible to meet the many needs of the department. Good organisational skills are important, as is the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams whilst upholding the Trust’s values.

Experience and interests in echocardiography, cardiovascular CT and the management of patients with infective endocarditis are actively welcomed and encouraged. The appointee will run cardiac imaging lists and outpatient clinics, review inpatients and participate in multi‑disciplinary team meetings.

Clinical

The successful applicant will join the cardiac imaging team at Oxford University Hospitals, and will work alongside other medical and technical members of staff. They will perform/supervise and report imaging studies, and will provide expert guidance to cardiology colleagues including via multidisciplinary team meetings. The post‑holder will also contribute directly to the clinical cardiology service via outpatient clinics and the care of inpatients (eg those with infective endocarditis).

Teaching/Research

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post‑holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post‑holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.

Clinical Governance

The post‑holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.

Personal and Professional Development

The post‑holder will be required to keep themself fully up‑to‑date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs.

Management

The post‑holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust.
