Job Summary

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for an enthusiastic Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in Heart Failure. You will join a dedicated team of five cardiology consultants, working within a dynamic and expanding department that prioritises innovation and patient‑centred care.

Rotherham is the second centre for complex cardiac device implantation and follow‑up in South Yorkshire, collaborating with visiting consultants from across the region, including Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. The department is supported by a state‑of‑the‑art Philips Azurion C12 cardiac catheterisation laboratory and a dedicated cardiac devices suite with a physiologist‑led loop recorder service.

This full‑time post is based mainly at Rotherham General Hospital and offers flexible working arrangements within a supportive, forward‑thinking environment that fosters professional growth and work‑life balance.

Responsibilities
  • Take a leadership role in providing care for Heart Failure patients, including Heart Failure clinics and patients admitted through the emergency department.
  • Collaborate closely with the Trust’s Heart Failure nurses and community services to deliver excellent patient care.
  • Contribute to future plans for implementing a consultant‑of‑the‑week model and weekend ward cover.
  • Participate in Cath Lab activity for in‑patients and out‑patients procedures, including angiograms and pacemaker implantation.
  • Develop and deliver state‑of‑the‑art services in a tailor‑made cardiology suite, including echocardiography, rapid access chest pain clinics, exercise treadmill testing, tilt‑table testing and ambulatory ECG monitoring.
  • Engage in research, audit and quality improvement activities, supported by a research nurse from the Trust R&D Department.
  • Attend fortnightly and weekly multidisciplinary team meetings with cardiac surgery, interventional cardiology, cardiology rhythm management and tertiary centre teams.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC.
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register – CCT expected within 6 months of interview date, or evidence of CESR application submission and within 6 months of obtaining Specialist Registration via CESR.
  • MBBS or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • MRCP specialist qualification or equivalent.
Experience
  • Experience in Heart Failure.
  • Desirable: experience in angiogram or pacemaker procedures.
Education and Teaching
  • Proven ability to teach and train others.
Research and Audit
  • Evidence of audit and implementation of change following the audit.
  • Desirable: relevant research published in a peer‑reviewed journal.
Ability and Skills
  • Any specific skills required to undertake the role beyond those required to achieve CCT.
Management Skills
  • Demonstrate effective team working skills.
  • Time management and organisational ability – e.g., experience developing and running training programmes.
  • Proven knowledge of NHS systems and processes.
  • Commitment to corporate responsibility and understanding of responsibilities to the organisation.
