Job description
Consultant Histopathologist

The closing date is 04 January 2026

We are looking to appoint up to 3 FTE Consultant Histopathologists with an interest in Breast, Gynae, Uropathology, Neuropathology & Haematopathology. Any other areas of subspecialist practice can be accommodated. We envisage the posts will be primarily based at Sheffield but there may be to support to services at Doncaster or Rotherham pending our laboratory consolidation.

We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full‑time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant staff of the Histopathology Department are organised into subspecialist reporting teams. Our consultants typically practice in 1 – 3 subspecialist areas of practice in line with their interests and with the needs of the department. Direct Clinical Care (DCC) work includes appropriate dissection, histology and cytology reporting, and MDT preparation and delivery.

SYB Histopathology delivers laboratory and reporting activity within the SYB Pathology Service network, and beyond, and increases in such activity are anticipated as well as closer operational collaboration between the different SYB sites. Reporting work is distributed across the relevant subspecialist teams and treated uniformly regardless of the source.
